OVERVIEW The United Nations Global Compact is a set of 10 principles for business conduct which deal with human rights, labor, environmental sustainability, and anticorruption “Joining” the Global Compact simply involves affirming these principles, and for an organization like ours, including them in our business practices, and reporting (very generally) on our related activities 2

10 PRINCIPLES OF THE GLOBAL COMPACT Human Rights Principle 1: Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; andPrinciple 1 Principle 2: make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. Principle 2: Labour Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;Principle 3 Principle 4: the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour;Principle 4 Principle 5: the effective abolition of child labour; andPrinciple 5 Principle 6: the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. 10 Members of the Global Compact take action by: Making the UN Global Compact principles an integral part of their business strategy, day-to-day operations and organizational cultureprinciples Incorporating the UN Global Compact and its principles in decision- making processes at the highest levels Engaging in partnerships that advance the UN Global Compact’s principles and support broader UN goals, such as the UN Millennium Development Goals Advancing the UN Global Compact and the case for responsible business practices through advocacy and outreach to peers, partners, clients, consumers and the public at large Making annual financial commitments to support the work of the UN Global Compact Office.

UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT Member organizations support the Global Compact through: formal endorsement of the 10 principles in business operations They also engage in: advocacy, networking, and voluntary reporting on adherence Participation is flexible and non-binding: Members voluntarily interpret principles for their own context Over 8,000 businesses in 145 countries currently participate in the Global Compact 11 GLOBAL COMPACT MEMBERSHIP

NEXT STEPS 14 Send a Letter of Commitment signed by the organization’s top leader to the United Nations affirming the desire to join the Global Compact (GC) Complete the brief Online Application Form Once accepted, create a formal (but conservative) Plan of Action for the next two years Keep records of activities pertinent to the GC Send a Communication of Progress report to the UN every two years detailing the efforts of the program Publically communicate results and activities to relevant stakeholders
