Forms of energy Everything is either Matter OR energy

ENERGY  Energy is all around you! You can see energy as light. You can feel it as wind.

What is energy?  Energy is the ability to do work.  Energy is required to do everything.  It takes energy to ride a bike, to mow lawn, to bake a cake and to blink an eyelid.

forms There are many forms of energy  Mechanical Energy  Chemical Energy  Electrical Energy  Thermal Energy (heat)  Nuclear Energy  Radiant Energy (electromagnetic, light)

Mechanical energy  Energy produced by moving objects.  Some examples are: Moving fan blades Moving bicycle Turning windmill When you kick a soccer ball, you give mechanical energy to the soccer ball to make it move.

Chemical energy  Energy produced by a chemical reaction.  Some examples are: Food Battery Gasoline Gasoline is a chemical that is burned in a car engine to release energy to move the car.

Electrical energy  Energy produced by the flow of electrons.  Some examples are TV Flashlights MP3 players

Thermal/ Heat energy  Energy produced by moving particles.  Heat energy can be produced by friction.  Heat energy can also be produced when particles collide.  Heat energy is what keeps people warm!

Nuclear energy  When the nucleus of an atom splits, nuclear energy is released.  When the nucleus splits (fission), nuclear energy is released in the form of heat energy and light energy.  Nuclear energy is also released when nuclei collide at high speeds and join (fusion).  Nuclear energy is the most concentrated form of energy.

Sound energy  Energy produced by sound waves traveling through the air.  Some examples are talking iPods movies

Light energy  Energy produced by light waves.  Some examples are Light bulb Sun Lava lamp  Light energy also includes X-rays Microwaves Radio waves Television waves

Energy transformations  The change between one type of energy to the other.
