2
Forms of energy Everything is either Matter OR energy
3
ENERGY Energy is all around you! You can see energy as light. You can feel it as wind.
4
What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work. Energy is required to do everything. It takes energy to ride a bike, to mow lawn, to bake a cake and to blink an eyelid.
5
forms There are many forms of energy Mechanical Energy Chemical Energy Electrical Energy Thermal Energy (heat) Nuclear Energy Radiant Energy (electromagnetic, light)
6
Mechanical energy Energy produced by moving objects. Some examples are: Moving fan blades Moving bicycle Turning windmill When you kick a soccer ball, you give mechanical energy to the soccer ball to make it move.
7
Chemical energy Energy produced by a chemical reaction. Some examples are: Food Battery Gasoline Gasoline is a chemical that is burned in a car engine to release energy to move the car.
8
Electrical energy Energy produced by the flow of electrons. Some examples are TV Flashlights MP3 players
9
Thermal/ Heat energy Energy produced by moving particles. Heat energy can be produced by friction. Heat energy can also be produced when particles collide. Heat energy is what keeps people warm!
10
Nuclear energy When the nucleus of an atom splits, nuclear energy is released. When the nucleus splits (fission), nuclear energy is released in the form of heat energy and light energy. Nuclear energy is also released when nuclei collide at high speeds and join (fusion). Nuclear energy is the most concentrated form of energy.
11
Sound energy Energy produced by sound waves traveling through the air. Some examples are talking iPods movies
12
Light energy Energy produced by light waves. Some examples are Light bulb Sun Lava lamp Light energy also includes X-rays Microwaves Radio waves Television waves
13
Energy transformations The change between one type of energy to the other.
