Lesson 3: Analyze Wants and Needs 7 th & 9 th Grade FACS

Design Tips: Analyzing Your Needs Start by identifying the things you need in the room so that it functions as you intend it to. Then, think about the things you would want to have in the room. Sometimes, things we need turn into things want when they are out of our price range.

Larger Spaces Do you need an area for doing your homework? If so, include that in your plan. Your needs may be different if you have a computer, so think about what you will need in your study area. Maybe you want to include a sitting area for watching TV or entertaining friends. Try a loveseat or a futon so it could also serve as a place for a friend to sleep over.

Smaller Spaces If you need a desk, consider one in an armoire so that it can be closed up when not in use, or put a small desk in an extra closet to utilize space. A nightstand that has shelves or drawers will add storage. You can store things under your bed! Take advantage of your “vertical space” by using tall thin furniture items.
