Prepositional phrase Definition: Begins with a preposition Example: Michael is sore from yesterday’s long soccer practice.

Infinitive Phrase: Definition: An infinitive phrase will begin with an infinitive (to + simple form of the verb). Example: Maria hopes to win the approval of her mother by improving her GPA.

Participial Phrase Definition: The phrase will begin with a present or past participial Example: Walking on the beach, Delia dodged the jellyfish that had washed ashore. Disclaimer: ending with –ing does not always mean a gerund phrase

Participial v. Gerund phrase Participial function as adjectives Gerunds function as nouns Participial example: Walking on the beach, Dalia dodged the jellyfish that had washed ashore. Gerund example: Walking on the beach is painful if jellyfish have washed ashore.

Appositive Phrase Definition: A noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it. Example: The insect, a disturbingly large and hairy cockroach, crawled across the kitchen table. Example: Gus, Erica’s black and white cat, slowly crept up behind the couch.. They couldn’t believe when the little boy stood up to John, the biggest bully in the whole school!

Compete: Prepositional phrase Write a sentence with a prepositional phrase. Each person must write a prepositional phrase and contribute to the group. When the timer goes off, hold up the one you think is the more creative. Leader stands up and reads sentence. Groups rate it on a scale of 1-3. 1 = sentence doesn’t make sense 3 = makes sense and is super creative!!
