Function and use in sentences. PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

Group of words that begins with a preposition and usually ends with a noun or pronoun, called the object of the preposition. I will meet you at the movie. Prep. Phrases might occur in a series and may have more than one object. My skis sped down the hill over the cliff into the river. We sent invitations to Jack, Ken, and Renee. PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES

Can function as an adjective or an adverb in a sentence. ADJECTIVALS – Modify nouns and pronouns. (acts as an adj.) ADVERBIALS – Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. (acts as an adv) FUNCTIONS OF PREP. PHRASES

Describe a noun or pronoun. Answer the questions: Which one? What kind? How much/many? The man with the beard is my dad. I bought a chest for my tools. ADJECTIVE PHRASES

Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. Answer the questions: How? Where? Why? When? To what extent? ADVERB PHRASES Adverbs are movable!

She overcame evil with kindness. I jumped into the water. For many years, I was afraid to talk. During the summer, the rainfall was heavy. ADVERB PHRASES

Prep Phrase at the beginning of the sentence (introductory clause) Automatically Adverb Phrase follows the subject Automatically Adjective Phrase follows the verb, adjective, or adverb Automatically Adverb If it can be moved, it is an ADVERB. ADJECTIVE phrases cannot move. RULES FOR PREP. PHRASES
