Overview SBIR/STTR – 3 phase program – Awards to small businesses to support high risk technological innovation through Research and Development – 11 participating agencies (Department of Defense accounts for about 50% of awards) SBIR – 2.5% of extramural R&D budget if greater than $100M STTR – 0.3% of extramural R&D budget if greater than $1B – Must be a small business to apply

4. Requirements Small business must apply – 500 or less employees – A for profit entity – Principal Investigator (PI) primarily employed by small business – 51% owned or controlled by U.S. Citizens or permanent resident aliens
