Properties of Fluids Viscosity Buoyancy DENSITY
2
Viscosity Viscosity is an internal property of a fluid that offers resistance to flow
3
Viscosity Thickness of Fluids Thicker = higher Viscosity Thinner = lower “ “
4
Viscosity Sample Problem Rate the following in order of highest viscosity to lowest viscosity Maple Syrup Water Vegetable Oil
6
Buoyancy The upward force that a fluid exerts on an object less dense than itself

11
Fun Fact The salt concentration in the “Dead Sea” in Israel is so high (extremely salty) that a person can float without any floatation device of any kind
12
Density The ratio of an objects mass to its volume Density is a physical property!!!!!
13
Calculating Density D = Mass/Vol
14
DENSITY Solely dependent on composition of substance, not the size
15
2x Water Demo
16
International Units Mass units = mg, g, kg Volume units = ml, cm 3, L
17
Are you like this person?
18
Density Triangle Density Mass Volume
19
Density Sample Problem What is the density of a man who weighs 35 kg and has a volume of 100 L?
21
What volume does a metal have if it has a density of 5 g/ml and a mass of 20 grams?
22
What is the mass of a rock with a density of 3 g/ml and a volume of 10 ml?
23
Density Characteristics
24
If a block of wood is sawed in half, what happened to the wood’s density? A) Density is now half B) Density is now double C) Density did not change
25
Temp vs Density Temp Volume
26
If a block of wood is sawed in half, what happened to the wood’s density? A) Density is now half B) Density is now double C) Density did not change
27
Exception*** Pure liquid water density = 1.0 g/ml (ALWAYS)
28
Ice Demo
29
Density Characteristics What happens when you throw a rock into a pond? Does it float or sink? Larger density value = ‘sink’ Smaller density density = ‘float’
31
Calculate the density of a pair of scissors? Density = mass / volume
32
Scissor Demo
33
Density of weird shaped objects Water displacement!!!!!!!
34
Find mass? How could we find out how much a pair of scissors weigh?
35
Scale Scissors mass = 30 grams
36
Find volume? WATER DISPLACMENT!!!!
37
40 ml of water (no scissors) Graduated Cylinder
38
Water level at 40 ml (no scissors) 55 ml water level (with scissors)
39
What is the volume of those scissors? Water level at 40 ml (no scissors) 55 ml water level (with scissors)
40
Scissors Mass = 30 grams Scissors Volume = 15 ml What is the density?
42
Real-Life Application
43
Old-school real-life application The King had a new crown and he didn’t know if it was real gold or not, Archimedes was given the task to find out what it was actually mad out of; Archimedes found that the kings new crown was actually made out of fools good not real gold. Archimedes he found this by putting some real gold in a tin of water that was full to the brim o water, when he put the gold in a bit of ran out over the top, he kept this water and recorded how much over flowed. He repeated this with fools gold and found that less water ran over the side. For this experiment he put two pieces of different gold that where exactly the same size, he than found that real gold was heavier. From this discover we learnt everything on the periodic table was all a different weight.
