What is Density? Defined as the amount of matter (mass) within a certain amount of space (volume) Represented by the following formula: Density= mass volume The SI unit is g/cm 3, mass= grams and volume= cm 3

Water has a density of 1.0 g/cm3 If an object has less density than water, it floats If an object has a greater density than water, it sinks

Density is classified as a physical property of matter because it can be measured. If you hold two objects of the same size, and one feels “heavier” it is because the material is more dense than the other. Brass cube Aluminum cube
