PDU Category Structure Update March 15, 2011

Effective March 1, 2011 PMI has updated the PDU category structure Who is impacted by this change? This new change will impact all individuals who currently hold an active or suspended PMP®, PgMP®, PMI-RMP®, and PMI-SP® credential. Changes will not impact individuals who pass one of these examinations after 1 March 2011 or CAPM certificants

What changed: 1.Category structure has been simplified, thereby reducing the number of categories from 18 to 6 2.All categories use the rule that one hour of learning activity is equivalent to one PDU 3.Categories have been expanded to include Web 2.0 learning opportunities 4.There will be limits on certain categories to require that all credential holders pursue project management continuing education as part of maintaining their credential

Why the change? 1.Improve and simplify the PDU structure 2.PMI surveyed PMI credential holders, education providers and community leaders The majority of survey respondents found the new categories to be appropriate Only 9% mentioned any additional ways to earn PDUs 82% were satisfied or very satisfied with the new categories 76% thought it would be much better or somewhat better than the current categories

Education Categories: Category A – Courses offered by PMI’s R.E.P.s or Chapters & Communities 1.Earn PDUs by attending educational courses offered by PMI’s Registered Education Providers (R.E.P.s). Examples: schools, consultants, corporate training departments, professional associations 2.Attending events offered by PMI, PMI chapters and communities of practice (seminars, conferences, etc) 3.Taking a PMI Publication Quiz

Education Categories: Category B – Continuing Education Completing an academic course being offered by a university or college OR Attending relevant educational courses offered by training organizations NOT registered with PMI. This may include training (or a Webinar) offered by your employer, another professional or membership association, or a non R.E.P. training organization.

Education Categories: Category C – Self-Directed Learning Individualized learning events involving personally conducted research or study Reading articles, books, or instructional manuals; Watching videos, using interactive CD-ROMs, Podcasts or other source material; Having formal discussions with colleagues, coworkers, clients or consultants; Being coached or mentored by a colleague, coworker or consultant

Giving Back to the Profession Categories: Category D – Creating New PM Knowledge Creating new knowledge for the topic related to your credential area of expertise (project management, project risk management, project scheduling, or program management). Authoring Presenting Creating coursework Speaking

Giving Back to the Profession Categories: Category E – Volunteer Service Provide volunteer, non-compensated PM services to non-employer or non-client customer groups Serve as an elected volunteer officer Serve as a volunteer/appointed committee member Providing PM related volunteer services Provide volunteer project management-related services (charitable group, college students, coach/mentor)

Giving Back to the Profession Categories: Category F – Working as a Professional in Project Management Work as a project manager (project risk management professional, project scheduling professional or program manager 15 PDUs per cycle (PMP and/or PgMP) 7.5 PDUs per cycle (PMI-SP and/or PMI-RMP) You may claim: 5 PDUs per 12-month period (PMP and/or PgMP) 2.5 PDUs per 12-month period (PMI-SP and/or PMI-RMP)
