p. 224-226 Compartments

How is it possible for your body to maintain a constant internal temperature when it’s cold outside? (discuss) Your body is a compartment; with an internal environment that’s kept separate from the external environment. Organisms, like cells, have external boundaries. What external boundary do our bodies have between the outside environment & our internal environment? What external boundary do our cells have? What does that boundary separate?

What are some specific internal conditions that must be met for life processes to take place in organisms? Temperature Water levels Mineral levels Nutrient levels pH Any others?

What are compartments that all organisms are composed of? CELLS: basic unit that makes up all living things.

Plant & Animal Cell Characteristics Cell Wall: found in prokaryotes & plants. Organelles: small compartments found only in eukaryotic cells. Highly specialize in function. Nucleus: Eukaryotes only. Contains DNA; genetic code for the organism. Cell Membrane: semipermeable barrier found in P & A cells.

View of Plant Cell

View of Animal Cell

What is the advantage of having so many compartments? Each compartment/organelle is specialized in it’s function. Ex. The nucleus provides the conditions required for DNA to perform its functions. Ex. Cell membrane regulates what substances what goes in/out of cell. Each compartment keeps our cells in a balanced state. What is this state called?

What happens when conditions within compartments undergo a significant lasting change? Illness Disease Possible death.

Questions for Discussion What are some compartments that are found in the human body? What are some conditions that those compartments regulate? What could happen to our compartments if the balance between the external and internal environment becomes slightly disrupted? What could happen to our compartments if the balance between the external and internal environment becomes severely disrupted?
