Canal Bank Trail Multi-use trail 10-12 feet wide Pedestrian lighting
6
Signalized Crossings Traffic Signal HAWK pedestrian signal
7
Neighborhood Connections
8
Other Features Integrated public art Minimal landscaping Maintained by Street Transportation Dept. Patrolled by Phoenix Police Canal serviced by SRP

16
Project Challenges Cost Over-runs Right-of-way Utility Conflicts Street Crossings Managing expectations
17
Cost Over-runs Intended users Canals are still active water delivery systems Trail must support SRP service vehicles
18
Cost Over-runs Solutions Pavement depth Standard: 9”Thick concrete Alternatives: 5.5” concrete on wire mesh Removal: Existing asphalt path south bank Alternative: build along north bank
19
Right-of-Way Encroachments Existing flood plains Service vehicle access 10 ft
20
Right-of-Way Solutions Encroachments Acquire land (if possible) Build on what we have Existing flood plains Build trail on flood plain Service vehicle access Signal pole and art location
21
Utility Conflicts Additional utilities along bank Horizontal and vertical clearance requirements
22
Utility Conflicts Solution Requirements: Horizontal – 20 feet from canal bank Vertical – 10 feet clearance of power lines Alternatives: Pull shading and art back from bank Use alternative lighting including low rise and lighted bollards
23
Street Crossings Most crossings are diagonal Solutions: Indian School Road and 16 th Street Off-trail Diagonal Perpendicular
24
Street Crossings Many are poorly spaced Existing signals Driveways Thomas Road at 22 nd Street 200 Ft Heavy Left
25
Street Crossings Some are near freeway ramps Progression Jurisdictional coordination 32 nd Street 750 feet
26
Street Crossings Some are just complex Increased intersection size Split phasing Reverse lane operation 7 th Street at Central High School 80 ft 240 feet
27
Street Crossings 24,000 ADT29,000 ADT 25,000 ADT 24,000 ADT 45,000 ADT 42,000 ADT 37,000 ADT 23,000 ADT All are extremely busy
28
Managing Expectations Initial enthusiasm meets budgetary realities Make sure people are happy with what they get Keep them informed Keep them excited!
