4 A- IMPACTS of PREVENTING SCHOOL DROPOUTS INTRODUCTION Human source is one of a country's most valuable assets. Appreciation of human resources by applying them may become possible only through education. 4

5 A- IMPACTS of PREVENTING SCHOOL DROPOUTS Extracurricular Activities: Extracurricular activities are the events that students participate in according to their wishes and choices such as sports, theater, literature, etc. in order to engage them in academic activities and/or non- academic activities under school auspices. 5

6 1.BENEFITS of EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES for STUDENTS a)Extracurricular activities provide an intellectual and social development. b)Extracurricular activities such as athletics, theater, and music improve students’ physical and mental health and allow them to discipline themselves. c)Prepares students for the working life, enhances the sense of responsibility. d)Exposes and develops the capabilities of analytical thinking and creativity of students. 7 e)Extra-curricular activities provides backdrop for the students at the risk of dropout, to love and engage to school. Reduce school dropouts. f)Since social events contains number of measures specifically for the students with discipline problem, can reduce the incidence of school violence. g)Achievements gained in extracurricular activities affect the academic success and make a positive contribution to individual career development. h)Extra-curricular activities provide socialization of students and develop certain skills such as time management. 8 C- SCHOOL DROPOUTS PREVENTION PRECAUTIONS at SECONDARY SCHOOLS 2.TYPES of EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Artistic Activities: Cinema, literature and sub- branches, theater, music, art, choir, musical instrument, solfege and so on. Intellectual and Scientific Activities: Science clubs, astronomy, chess, and robotics. 8

9 C- SCHOOL DROPOUTS PREVENTION PRECAUTIONS at SECONDARY SCHOOLS Social Activities: Environmental activities, community service, school newsletter, annual, discussion clubs and so on. Practical Activities: Hobby clubs, gardening, crafts, handicrafts and so on. Physical Activities: All branches of sports. Administrative Activities: Class representation, student council, school clubs such as the presidency. 9

School events and clubs don’t satisfy the expectations and wishes of the students, 10

11 Some school administrators under estimate club works and extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activity meeting are generally irregular. 11

12 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM Student-related ones: Inadequate promotion of the activities, Due to the insufficient guidance activities at primary schools, most of the students do not aware of their abilities and interests, Lack of physical and institutional infrastructure of the schools prevents students to participate the social clubs they wish. 12

13 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM 4.WHAT SHOULD BE MADE IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE SCHOOL DROPOUTS BY MEANS OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES? Interests, abilities and requests of the students should be taken in consideration for the club works and other activities. Extracurricular activities should be student-centered. Participation of all which is important in the formation of a culture of democracy should be featured. 13

14 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM Students should be guided accurately and effectively in event and club selection. Extra-curricular activity should be given to students in primary education. Because most of the habits are formed at primary school. More active students and teachers should be awarded. The school's activity areas should be open at all times. 14

15 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM Classroom representation, student council, etc should be constituted. School social services should be established, expanded the work environment and should be made more effective. School social services should work in cooperation with youth centers, public authorities, and civil society organizations. Some social activities should be integrated with regular curriculum introduced to the students. 15

16 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM In the case of insufficiency of facilities, materials and finance; -Local governments - Private institutions -Media -Sports clubs and so on. institutions should support the system. Families should be informed about events. In-service courses and seminars should be given to the teachers be entrusted with activities. 16

17 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM Student should be provided with financial income by means of Extra-curricular activities (product sales etc.) Students should be provided with certificates at the end of the activities, End products of the activities should be promoted by exhibitions, festivals and etc. Required conditions should be constituted in order to ensure the active participation of the students with disabilities. 17

18 SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT TEAM OUR GOALS As a result of events our objectives for the students; to gain confidence in their own cultural identities, to provide basic development by participating in activities on their own initiative, to prevent school dropouts. 18
