What this presentation will cover: Supporting students (Start a preschool, n.d.) The physical environment of the classroom Integrating students with disabilities (The learning express preschool, n.d.) (Wordpress, 2008) (CP Rochester, n.d.) Teachers as a role model for students

Supporting Students When support is given to a student it is important to consider the student’s individual needs (Kemple, Duncam, & Strangis, 2002). Each child needs a different amount of support. Too much support can be detrimental to a child’s development. The most effective time to give support to a student is during the time of conflict (Kemple & Hartle, 1997). Supporting students right away when they are having problems interacting with other students will enhance the relationships the students have with each other. Ensuring each child feels like they are part of a friendly group will help the students get along better, This can be done by taking group photos and creating activities that makes the class work together (Hyson & Taylor, 2011) (Thurston Talk, (2013) (The Intelligent Nest Files, 2013) (National Dissemination Center For Children With Disabilities, (2010) (Developmentallearningcentre, 2011)

Teachers as role models If a teacher is empathetic, responsive and generous their students are likely to copy that behaviour (Hyson & Taylor, 2011) They will also copy negative behaviour so its important to only behave how you want your students to behave! Respecting students and understanding their individual needs encourages the students in a class to become a caring community (Kemple & Hartle, 1997) (Thumbs Dreams Time, n.d.) (Sparkle Stories, 2013) (Hi! Magazine, 2013) Delivery Superstock, n.d.)

Classroom Environment The layout of the classroom can both positively and negatively influence student interactions Having areas for each activity big enough for a group of children encourages children to play together and develop social skills (Kemple, Duncam, & Strangis, 2002) To avoid conflict between students, it is essential to make sure activity areas are not in the way of each other or in traffic pathways and that there is plenty of material to use (Kemple & Hartle, 1997) (Vines Speech Files, 2013) (Blogspot, n.d.) (Jumpn Jungle, 2010)

Children With Disabilities Children with a disability can benefit immensely from being a part of a normal class. Teachers need to be wary of other students not accepting a child with a disability. A child with a disability can develop better social skills and build more friendships in a mixed classroom (Kemple, Duncam, & Strangis, 2002). Teachers need to have an understanding of programs used for general students and for those who have disability because it is becoming increasingly common for a children with a disability to be mixed with other students (Kemple, Duncam, & Strangis, 2002).
