Thinking Maps provide a “common visual language” in our SIGNET learning community for transferring thinking processes, integrating learning, and for continuously assessing progress. Tools for Learning, p. 1-2

Every student will begin the year by completing an “introductory activity” The purpose of the introductory activity is to introduce our new students to the routines and procedures of the SIGNET Center independent learning contract. This activity also gives us time to assess our students’ abilities and plan for future instruction. Our introductory activity is called………

1. What centers are offered? 2. What is the goal of centers? 3. What is a contract? 4.How many centers must a student complete by the end of the year? 5. How are the students evaluated? 6. What are teacher expectations?

Each year the Center determines a focus of study we call our T.A.G. Unit. Designed to extend VA SOL objectives, the T.A.G. unit integrates all major content areas while emphasizing critical and creative thinking skills, and giving our students the opportunity to practice and improve their independent and interactive learning skills.

We will study the contributions of the Ancient Greeks to modern society. Focus will be placed on system used by the Greeks that are still in use today in original or modified forms.

A system only works when everyone who uses the system understands it. Mans capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's capacity for injustice makes democracy necessary. Reinhold Neibaur If I have seen farther than others, it is because I stood on the shoulders of giants. Sir Isaac Newton The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children. Dietrich Bonhoeffer Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about. Benjamin Whorf

Odyssey of the Mind Informal competition Collaborative problem solving Time and material constraints Exercises and practices critical and creative thinking

There are no grades at SIGNET Each student’s work is evaluated daily by one of the SIGNET teachers At the end of each semester, parents will receive a formal rubric evaluation concerning their child Is my child graded at SIGNET?
