New Start up January 2014 Innovative SME 5 high qualified staff (intention to grow to 20) Based in The Netherlands Geo Information Services to support the energy and the maritime markets Bridging the gap between the industrial and public users and universities Developing new services combining models, in-situ measurements and EO data. HERMESS
5
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Markets HERMESS is targeting Maritime Transport Energy Solutions where the environment will impact human activities/operations or where human activities/operations have impact on the environment
6
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services ISSWIND Supporting Services for the Wind Power Industry European Space Agency (ESA) funded project ARTES 20 IAP programme Goal: The development of operational services for a wide range of users through the combination of different space-assets. Duration 2 years Aim: improve weather forecast using space data: GNSS data: retrieve water vapor distribution from total wet delays GNSS: global navigation satellite systems GPS, GALILEO, GLONAS, BEIDOU Scatterometer data: sea surface wind speed and direction Atmospheric Motion Vector (AMV): motion of clouds or other atmospheric features
7
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Navigation: sat position, signal speed, time receiver position GNSS tomography: sat position, receiver position, time wet delays humidity GNSS data GNSS observation stations in the Netherlands
8
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Scatterometer data Sea surface wind (offshore only)
9
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Atmospheric Motion Vector
10
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Services Wind resource maps Wind and wave hindcast databases Weather forecast Power forecast, workability
11
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Partners GMV, Portugal –Project lead, GNSS data modelling GMV, Poland HERMESS, the Netherlands –Service provider: Weather Forecast, Power Forecast, Workability NESTER, Portugal –Independent R&D center: sustainable energy systems ECN, the Netherlands –Operations and Maintenance (input: weather forecast)
12
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services End users Ventolines, the Netherlands –Wind power consultancy company, –Development, contracting, financing, construction, operation Windunie Trading BV –Sells produced electricity of many wind farms Tauron, Poland –Energy holding company, owns wind parks ECN/EWTW, the Netherlands –Operates test facility for wind turbines REN, Portugal –Runs the national power grid EKOvation, the Netherlands –Designs, builds, operates innovative multi-purpose vessels.
13
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Phase 1 Assessment of technical feasibility (2 years) Retrieval of humidity profiles from GNSS signals limited to 1D vertical profiles Assimilation of ao humidity profiles in WRF –Nudging –3DVAR Comparison of humidity profiles: –WRF, GNSS, balloons Scripts to read and exchange data Market analysis Competitors, alternative products, revenues, costs.
14
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Phase 1 Results and conclusions Vertical humidity profiles can be retrieved from GNSS Required improvements: –Extension from integrated water vapor columns (1D) to 3D –Scaling issue: shape ok, 2m RH differs from observations Good agreement between (shape of) calculated and measured humidity profiles Greatest impact if observations are obtained upwind. Effect of nudging single GNSS observation: –approximately 2 to 3 hours –20 - 40 km Critical components tested: service technically feasible
15
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Phase 2 Demonstration (2 years) Retrieval of humidity profiles from GNSS signals implementation 3D humidity data retrieval Assimilation of humidity profiles in WRF –Nudging –3DVAR Assessment of optimal solution taking in account: Accuracy, computation effort, operational implications Workshops, feedback from end-users –Consolidation of user requirements –Scripts to deliver data in required format Provide weather, power, workability forecast to end users Evaluation of service by end users
16
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services Phase 2 Demonstration sites The Netherlands: –offshore wind park (Ventolines), –onshore wind park (Windunie Trading BV, EWTW) –North Sea workability (EKOvation) Poland: onshore wind park (Tauron) Portugal: onshore wind park (REN) Validation data Wind, power data to be provided by end-users (confidentially) Meteorological mast IJmuiden: wind, pressure, temperature, etc; 21–92 m Meteorological mast Cabauw: wind, pressure, temperature, etc; 20-200 m
17
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services User requirements (1) Services 1 and 2 ( Wind resource maps, Wind and wave hindcast databases) Historical analysis: Minimum 10 years Future assessment horizon: Minimum 5 years Measured points: Hub height and ground. Minimum measurement campaigns: 6 month. Service Cost: maximum 25% extra of current similar services
18
Data Applied Research Consultancy Services User requirements (2) Services 3 and 4 ( Weather forecast, Power forecast, Workability) Forecasting range: minimum 48h ahead. Daily updates: Minimum 2, Temporal resolution: Maximum 1 h. Reliability: Maximum of one daily delivery missed in a 2 day period. Measured points: Hub height and ground. Wind estimation error (RMSE): in wind speed (maximum < 0.5 m/s) and direction (maximum < 5 degrees).
