1 Getting a Driver’s License

2 Junior License »You will have a junior license until you are 18. *(Unless you take DE classroom AND in-car, drive on your license for 1 year without a moving violation or an a crash that was your fault and fill out the PennDot form and submit it.) »You may NOT drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. *(There are some exceptions we will discuss.) »You may not have more passengers than you have seat belts for and all passengers must be belted.

3 Junior License – cont. »When you turn 18 a junior license automatically becomes a senior license. (If you are stopped by police they can tell you are 18 from your birth date printed on your license.) »You will receive a mandatory 90-day suspension if you accumulate 6 or more points or are convicted of driving 26 mph or more over the posted speed limit.

4 Taking the license test »You will need the following: »Schedule an appointment with PennDot. »Your valid learner’s permit (Not a copy) »The driver’s license of the person 21 or older who accompanied you the the test center for the license test.

5 Taking a license test »A current insurance card for the vehicle you are using for the test. »The valid registration card for the vehicle you are using for the test. »A parent or guardian to sign the DL-180C saying you had 65 hours of driving experience.

6 Taking a license test »The vehicle you are testing in must have current safety and emission inspection stickers. »All lights, turn signals, horn, windshield wipers, tires, seat belts, mirrors, doors and tires on your vehicle must work and meet safety standards.

7 Taking a license test »You and the driver’s license examiner must wear your seat belts. »The Driver’s license examiner is not allowed to trick you in any way. »The test will start with parallel parking.

8 Taking a license test »If you successfully complete the parallel parking you will proceed to the road test. »The test route must have 3 left turns, 3 right turns, 3 traffic control devices (usually traffic lights) and 3 speed zone changes.

9 Taking a license test »If you pass the test you will be issued your temporary photo license on the spot. »Your “permanent” junior license will arrive in the mail in a few weeks.

10 Tips for the license test »Make sure you have all the documentation for you, your parent and the vehicle. »Make sure all the lights, wipers etc are working and make sure the car has a current inspection sticker.

11 Tips for the license test »Make sure you are familiar with the vehicle you are testing in. »PRACTICE parallel parking in that vehicle BEFORE you go to the testing center. »Be courteous to the examiner.

12 Tips for the license test »You get to move the vehicle 3 times either forward or backward for parallel parking. »Look over your shoulder and signal before leaving the parallel parking spot. »Pay attention to the little things:

13 Tips for the license test »Don’t Speed »Come to a complete stop – not a rolling stop. »Check your blind spot. »Keep 2 hands on the wheel at all times. »Be observant – for stop signs etc.

14 If you fail the license test »You get 3 tries per permit. »If you fail on all 3 attempts you pay $5 and get a new permit with 3 more tries. »No you do NOT have to wait another 6 months. You can retest in 7 days.
