2 Late Romantic Era Johannes Brahms Born in Germany in 1833 died in Vienna at age 64. His father was a bass player and his mother was a seamstress. He had many famous musical connections such as Franz Liszt and the composer Schumann. He moved to Vienna where he started to compose in greater amounts. He was a handsome young man though in his later years he became untidy and overweight with a very ragged beard. He never married, though, when the composer Schumann died he took a liking to his widow, Clara. He was an abrupt character, who always spoke his mind. Wrote the famous lullaby song Waltz and Hungarian Dance.

3 Late Romantic Era Camille Saint-Saëns Born in Paris, France in 1835 died in 1921 at age 86. As a small boy, he was destined to become another Mozart. He could play the piano at age 2 and composing at 3! He was an amateur scientist, archaeologist, essayist, poet, and playwright. Some people said he was cursed with the ability to compose too quickly. When he was 40 he married a 19 year old named Marie. They had 2 children together. He didn’t have time for a family life, so he left without warning and never saw Marie again. He is most famous for a composition which he never intended to be heard in public, Carnival of the Animals. This composition shows that he had a sense of humor.

5 Late Romantic Era Sergi Rachmanioff Born in Russia in 1873 died in Beverly Hills, California at age 70. He is one of the most famous pianist in history. He was an aristocrat, born into a wealthy family though they lost their fortune when he was 9. His family moved to America where he became a professional pianist. His piano playing was greatly admired by Tchaikovsky. He won the “Great Gold Medal” for his piano performance. Because of his large hands he was able to play thing on the piano that others could not. 6 Late Romantic Era Born in Munich in 1864 died in 1949 at the age 85. He was a child prodigy and began lessons at age 4 and started to compose at age 6. His most famous work is Don Juan which is based on the story of the famous lover. He was an equally successful composer and conductor. He married a singer and they lived in the Bavarian Alps. Be was an excellent business man who was always turning his music into $. He often forced members of his orchestra to play card games, and would take all their money. 7 John Phillip Sousa Born 1854 November 6 Washington, D.C. Died March 6, 1932 (aged 77) His nickname is "The March King“ because of his mastery of march composition. His most famous work is the piece “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
