Geology and Geologists Geology- the study of solid Earth; the rocks it is composed of and the processes by which they change Geologists- a scientist who studies the solid and liquid matter that constitutes the Earth as well as the processes and history that have shaped it

The Lithosphere Lithosphere = outer surface of the Earth The Earth is made up of Four layers. crust mantle inner core outer core

Layers of the Earth The crust is the thinnest layer on the outside. It is the coolest layer of the earth. Water and dirt Aka PLATES The mantle is the second layer of earth and is hotter than the crust. Convection currents Flows (liquid like) Moves the crust

Layers of the Earth The outer core is the third layer of the earth. It is hotter than the mantle Liquid METALS (nickel and iron) The inner core is the hottest layer of the earth, and in the center of the earth. Solid METAL

Rocks Weathering – break down of large rock into small pieces or sediments Erosion – movement of sediments from one spot to another Wind, water Sediments – small pieces of rock Deposition – sediments settle to the bottom Foliation – many layers of metamorphic rock Caused by pressure
