2. What is Assessment
Assessment is the evaluation of the quality, or ability of a student throughout a learning process.
Purpose of assessment in the classroom:
Assessment for learning is focused on allowing teachers to gather information about students –how they learn, what they know, how they make connections. This way they can design instruction to help students to advance their learning.
Assessment as learning must be designed to help students understand how they learn, how they relate it to previously gained knowledge, and how they use it.
Assessment of learning is what we usually think we are doing when we give a test or require students to demonstrate what they have learned. And this partially correct but it is much more.

3. DIAGNOSTIC Assessment
 Diagnostic assessment includes basic measures of reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics using tests endorsed by the school or school district. The assessment results provide important insights into the student's current skills in math, reading, and writing.

4. FORMATIVE Assessment
 Formative assessment is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures employed by teachers during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student attainment.

5. SUMMATIVE Assessment
Summative assessment is the assessment of the learning and summarizes the development of learners at a particular time. After a period of work, for example, a unit for two weeks, the learner sits for a test and then the teacher marks the test and assigns a score.

6. TRADITONAL Assessment
A traditional assessment is an assessment in which students select responses from a multiple-choice list, a true/false list, or a matching list.

7. EXAMPLES OF Traditional assessment:
Traditional assessments usually produce a written document, such as a paper, test, or quiz, covering the material learned in the classroom.
Traditional assessments often use the following types of questions – true/false, multiple choice, matching, short-answer, fill-in-the-blank.
Essay and Graphing assessments can be used as well in the science class room.

8. PERFORMANCE Assessment
Performance assessment is a method of teaching and learning that involves both process and product. It is not just a testing strategy. Performance assessment tasks involve students in constructing various types of products for diverse audiences.

9. Examples of performance assessment
Group Projects-  task each group with creating a presentation that covers important people in science, for which the group must research that persons background and why they are important in science.
Portfolios-  students will assess their own academic performance. For example, at the beginning of the science lesson give each student the assignment of putting together a portfolio of his work over the course of the grading period through science lesson. At the end of the lesson, each student should have a varied collection of his work, including that which needed improvement and that which demonstrated a developing understanding of the material. 
Written Assessments- An essay assignment gives each student the task of searching the material for meaning and nuance that they do not get from simply memorizing names and facts. For example, ask each student to write about a break through in science and discuss how and why its important. Give students flexibility by offering several assignment prompts from which they can choose; in this manner, a student can answer one about which he feels confident.
