3 1. It’s October 2003. Angy finds a lump in her left breast.

4 2. She makes an appointment with her doctor.

5 3. Her doctor tells her to have a mammogram and an ultrasound of the lump.

6 4. After the ultrasound, a doctor does a biopsy of the lump to test it for cancer.

7 5. The test is positive. It is cancer.

8 6. The surgeon tells Angy “Good for you. You found it early and didn't wait to come in.”

9 7. It’s November 2003. Angy has surgery to remove the cancer.

10 8. It’s January 2004. Angy starts Chemotherapy.

11 9. Chemo kills cancer cells.

12 10. It kills some normal cells too and this can make you feel sick.

13 11. Chemo makes her vomit.

14 12. She feels tired and nauseous.

15 13. Sometimes she has a fever.

16 14. Chemo gives her a rash on her hands.

17 15. Chemo makes her hair fall out. Angy wears a wig or hats to teach English class.

18 16. Her hair is going to grow back.

19 17. It’s May 2004. Angy starts radiation treatments.

20 18. It’s July 2004. She’s going to take a pill, Tamoxafen to keep the cancer from coming back.

21 19. Many women have breast cancer. 1 woman in every 8 women in the United States.

22 20. Most survive cancer because they find it early and treat it.

23 Suggested activities for the classroom: Have students listen and repeat the story. Students circle key vocabulary from the story. Students alphabetize 10 to 15 key words. Check students comprehension of key words. Concentration card activity of parts of the story. Write the word under the picture. (worksheet) Teacher asks students, What’s number 3, 5, etc? Students do the same in pairs or groups. Who said it? Read or write a quote on the board and ask students “Who said it?” Missing letters of key words or a cloze of the story. Students use ordinal numbers to sequence the events in the story, (worksheet) Multi-level dictation (True False worksheets) Multi-level dictation of parts of the story. Spelling test. Word find of key words. Multiple choice test of the story. WH questions of the story. Students read in pairs after completion. Discussion on cancer prevention.
