1. Mission: The Carruth Center for Psychological & Psychiatric Services (CCPPS) is an agency within WELL WVU under the Division of Student Affairs. The mission of CCPPS is to further the goals and objectives of West Virginia University by providing psychological, psychiatric, and substance abuse treatment services that foster the academic and personal development of students, and by providing outreach and consultative services to faculty, staff, and parents.

3. The mission of WELL WVU – The Students’ Center of Health: …is to foster the complete well being of our students through health care, education, promotion and related services. Provide Services: We provide assessment, evaluation and treatment of student’s physical, emotional, social health care needs. Promote Prevention: We are dedicated to educating and empowering students to help them realize their full potential. We provide programs and services designed to raise student awareness of healthy lifestyles and behaviors. Provide Advocacy: We are committed to assisting and supporting students in all health care issues. Foster Research in Best Practices: We support ongoing research efforts into all areas relating to health and wellness. We monitor, promote and incorporate best practices in all we do.

4. Services Counseling Services The Center provides individual, career, group, and couples counseling. Examples of issues covered are stress management, substance abuse, health- related issues, relationship issues, and psychopathology. Services are provided at three locations: Health Sciences, the Student Services Center, and Boreman North (SAP and Substance use disorders).

5. Services Psychiatric Services Physicians, Residents, and Physician Assistants provide psychiatric evaluations, follow-up care, and consultation to students. They consult regularly with other clinicians at the Center and are involved in direct client care, program development, School of Medicine activities, and training. Services are provided at two locations: Health Sciences and the Student Services Center.

Services Training and Instruction CCPPS serves as a practicum site for doctoral level students in WVU’s Counseling and Clinical Psychology programs, Master’s students in the counseling and social work programs, and as a training site for an APA-accredited predoctoral psychology training program.

7. Services Teaching/Research Staff members may serve on dissertation and thesis committees for related departments or teach classes on orientation, learning strategies, communication, and diversity issues and other courses relevant to a degree in counseling, psychology, or medicine. CCPPS also serves as a site for data collection for student research projects deemed appropriate for the setting. Staff members may also involve themselves in program evaluation and development, as well as other research projects

8. Services Psychological Consultation Consultation is provided to WVU administrators, faculty, and staff, particularly in the areas of Residential Education, Student Conduct, Undergraduate Advising, Athletics, and Disability Services. Consultation is also provided to University programs and committees (e.g., Social Justice Council, Sexual Assault Task Force, Safe Zone, and the Alcohol Committee). The Center provides an after-hours crisis phone for consultative services during psychological emergencies within the WVU community, and participates in on-site crisis interventions in extraordinary cases (e.g., death of a student). Additionally, parents, other relatives, or friends of students may request consultative services in regards to a WVU student.

9. Services Psychoeducational and Outreach Programming Workshops and presentations are provided to student groups, individual classes, residence halls, administrative units, and staff groups on a variety of topics. The Carruth Center is active in its outreach efforts to promote both awareness of psychological issues and openness to prevention and treatment of mental illness. These efforts are often in conjunction with WELL WVU’s Wellness and Health Promotion Unit.

10. Services Psychological Testing, Assessment & Cognitive Training Learning Disability (LD) assessments, personality assessments, and career assessments are provided to students for a nominal fee. ADHD screenings and cognitive training are provided in the Center’s ADHD clinic (located at Health Sciences) for a nominal fee.

11. Services Professional Service CCPPS Center staff members participate in service to the state and to the profession of psychology, which is in concert with the mission of WVU. These efforts are through a variety of offices, community groups, and professional organizations, such as the WVU President’s Office of Social Justice, Monongalia School Guidance Program, Regional Hypnosis Training Workshop, Rape and Domestic Violence Information Center, American Red Cross Disaster Relief, American Psychological Association, Valley Health Care Systems, Inc., Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers, and the West Virginia Psychological Association.

12. Eligibility For Service and Fees Enrolled WVU students who have paid full fees are eligible for counseling and consultation services, for up to 12 clinically indicated individual or couples sessions per year. There are no limits on group sessions. Additional charges are assessed for testing services based on the service requested. A service fee of $15 is assessed for counseling sessions after the 9th session. Students who graduate or withdraw from the University are not eligible for continued services beyond the minimum sessions necessary to arrange appropriate continuity of care. Students who are not enrolled for summer sessions are eligible for services only if they were enrolled for the previous Spring semester, have pre-registered for the Fall semester, and have paid the “Summer Services Fee” through the Office of Student Accounts. A current WVU ID card or a receipt to show these fees have been paid is required prior to receipt of treatment. Incoming Pre-registered Freshmen are eligible only for consultative services and testing services which may be required before they begin classes in the Fall or Spring semester for which they are admitted. Non-student Partners of students are eligible for couples counseling only. (There is currently a policy under review that would require a co-payment for non-student partners to receive services at the Center. If approved, this fee would take effect from the first session and for all subsequent sessions.) Children of students are not eligible for services at the Center. Faculty and staff are eligible only for consultation services, unless they are the partner of a student, in which case they would be eligible only for couples counseling, so long as they paid the necessary fees.
