Great Plain Native Americans Homes
Native Americans lived in homes such as tepees. Tepees are shaped like cones and are made with animal skins and poles. They also had homes called Lodges. Lodges are round huts built over a deep hole. Lodges are dome shaped.

Transportation Travois were a structure made of two poles, which crossed at the top and attached to some netting or a wooden frame. Dogs pulled the Travois to carry their goods. Walking was the Great Plain’s peoples main form of transportation. They used snow shoes during the winter which helped them walk on the snow.

Food Buffalo were the main source of food. They used every part of the buffalo but that was their main source of meat. They also ate corn, beans, squash and pumpkins. The women collected berries that were eaten fresh and dried.

Weapons Tools Crafts Tomahawk-A warrior hatchet that could be used ceremonially as a peace offering. Bow and arrow- They used bow and arrows for hunting and battle. Gun- Guns were also used for hunting Knives- Knives were a tool used by the Great Plains Native Americans. Grinding Stone- It was used to grind corn, berries, or seeds to be used for cooking Thumb Scraper- Thumb scraper was used to scrape hides for clothing or food. Peace Pipe- A peace pipe was passed among the men after battle to show how brave they were. War Shield-They made war shields to wear during battle to protect themselves.

They believed the earth was the mother of all spirits.
Customs and Beliefs The Sun dance was a custom among the Great Plains Native Americans. It was an important dance that lasted for many days. They would not drink and eat for many days. They believed it would make the great spirit proud and they would get a reward. They believed the earth was the mother of all spirits. The sun was believed to give the earth light and warmth. It was powerful in their beliefs too. They also believed in the medicine man. He helped heal the sick and explained their dreams.

There are currently 3,200 Pawnee tribe members.
The new word I learned while doing this project is Pawnee. The Pawnee are known as the “friendly tribe”. There are currently 3,200 Pawnee tribe members.
