2. Introduction The role of a farm has been the same for thousands of years, the only change is how we farm it. The prominent role of a farm is to produce the raw ingredients for food making. This will never change. Not all farms produce the same things. Some only produce Milk, some only produce meat and some only produce grain. Farms produce different items all around the world as the climate is different. We will take a look into all aspects of the modern farm in much more detail as we go along. We will talk about farm machines, animals and storage. @homeed101

3. Animals On the Farm Famers have been keeping the same types of animals for thousands of years. Animals are the only source of meat and meat is a great source of protein. The main animals farmed for meat are cattle, sheep, chicken and pig. You can eat many other meats but these are what we eat on a daily basis and what is demanded from farmers. Some animals give more than just meat. Cows give milk for dairy. @homeed101

4. Cattle Bull – Male Cattle The bull is mostly used on the farm for meat. They are grown until three years old then taken to a factory where they are put to sleep then cut into beef. Some bulls are kept for breading, the stronger bull’s are used to impregnate the cow who will give birth to calf. Bulls are very powerful and can be very difficult to look after safely. It is never a good idea to go into a field or barn with a bull as they can be very temperamental. Calf – Baby Cattle Baby cattle are known as calf’s. The calf’s will be separated into male and female then either kept on the farm for diary or meat or they will be sold at a life stock auction to a farmer who can farm them. Cow – Female Cattle Cows tend to be gently animals unless provoked and wont normally attack. They are used to produce milk. This is called diary farm. The farmer removes milk from the cows udders multiple times a day and sends it off to factories to be bottle as milk or made into butter, cream, cheese and yogurt. Cows can be used for beef production like bulls. @homeed101

6. Pig Male is called a Pig or hog Female is called a sow Baby is called a piglet Pigs are bread for food, there isn’t any part of the pig that is not used in food production and consumption. Bacon, ham, gammon and sausage are a few of the most common uses for pig. Sow’s are used for breeding piglets and pigs are grown for the meat. Depending on the age of the pig it is best for different cuts of meat. The younger the animal the leaner, softer the meat. Sow’s produce milk for the piglets but this milk is not farmed for dairy. @homeed101

8. Sheep Male – Ram Female – Sheep Baby - Lamb Sheep are another versatile animal. We use them for food mainly but there fur is better known as wool. We use wool for clothing as it is very thick and warm. Wool was used to make flying jackets because it kept the pilot very warm up in the sky where it is extremely cold. Most lambs are killed for the meat as it is nicer and leaner to eat than mutton from a sheep. Lambs that grow into sheep are used for breeding and have their fur removed by sheering to harvest the wool. Milk is produced by the sheep to feed the lambs but it is not farmed for diary. @homeed101
