6 U SE AND E FFECTS OF D RUGS, A LCOHOL, AND S UBSTANCES Alcohol’s Effects on the Body can range greatly depending on: Size Food eaten State of health and fatigue Mental attitude Speed and amount of consumption RESULTS Alcohol is a depressant –central nervous system, judgement

7 U SE AND E FFECTS OF D RUGS, A LCOHOL, AND S UBSTANCES Long Term Effects – Cancer of liver, stomach, colon, larynx, esophagus, and breast; high blood pressure and heart attacks. Areas of the brain are, stokes, depression, memory and vision. Tolerance: becomes accustomed to a drug – needs more/larger amount Dependence: body becomes accustomed to or builds up a resistance to a drug and needs the drug to function. Major psychological symptom of dependence is a strong desire or emotional need to continue using a drug.

8 U SE AND E FFECTS OF D RUGS, A LCOHOL, AND S UBSTANCES Long Term Effects Brain Damage – destroys nerve cells – can’t grown Digestive Problems – irritates lining, acid & ulcers Liver Damage – Cirrhosis, hepatitis - death Heart Disease – blood pressure is high - death Fetal Alcohol Syndrome – child w birth defects

9 U SE AND E FFECTS OF D RUGS, A LCOHOL, AND S UBSTANCES Short-Term Effects Brain – depressant – physical changes, slows the speed of brain, coma to death Bloodstream – body temp drops due to increased blood flow Liver – rate of use, can’t process - drunk Kidneys - dehydrated Car crashes - 1/2 of fatal crashes & 2/3 of all crashes Synergism – alcohol plus other drugs = coma/death Overdose – excessive amounts past limit factors
