6 Ask Yourself these 3 questions: What are the advantages of using this format? What are the disadvantages of using this format? Which one best fits my needs?

7 Digital or Electronic Portfolios –Minimal storage space –Easy to create back-up files –Can be reproduced, shared or sent (cheap) –Interactive – can link from doc to doc. –Long shelf life –Increases technology skills –Multi-media

8 Advantages of digital Motivate students Foster active learning Serve as instruments for feedback Serve as instruments for discussion of student performance Exhibit “benchmark” performance Easily accessible Easily upgraded Easily cross references student work

9 Disadvantages of digital Access to equipment may be limited Initially, a great deal of time is needed to train the students in the technology itself Difficult for one teacher to orchestrate

15 WORKING PORTFOLIO Holding tank for work not yet completed Work may be selected later for a more permanent display Exists mainly for the student and the teacher PowerPoint – excellent application for this

16 SHOWCASE PORTFOLIOS Most rewarding for the student Demonstrates highest level of achievement Audience is real-world (and possibly entire world) Showcases student perceptions of favorite, best or most important work

17 EVALUATON PORTFOLIOS (can be digital or web-based) Used to document achievement for grading purposes Used to document progress towards standards Used to place students appropriately Audience includes teachers, parents, school districts
