2 About me Born & raised in Haysville, Kansas Graduated from KU --- Rock Chalk! Worked for an optometrist while in school Graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, TN Worked for an optometrist while in school Completed residency in pediatrics Visited offices all over the country Joined 2 doctor private practice in Leavenworth, KS Husband joined the practice 1 year later 4 doctors & 2 locations

3 Objectives Feel comfortable working with children and special needs patients Learn tips for measuring visual acuities, stereo vision, dilation, and IOPs Learn tips for making the patient feel comfortable with you Learn tips for keeping the patient’s attention

4 Before the Exam How to prepare your office for the patient Neat, orderly….get rid of the clutter! Prep exam room at the time if needed Exp: If doc left a mess of trial lenses from the patient before then make sure to pick up BEFORE you pick up the patient

7 Case History Ask questions in a pre-testing a room if possible Minimize time in the exam room Lose interest if stuck in the same chair too long before the doctor can see them Time is critical with these patients Have a small window for pre-tester and doctor to get good data…move, move, move

8 Case History Normal birth/development? Reaching milestones on time Premature Were they on oxygen? Receiving any interventions? Speech OT PT

9 Visual Acuities Allen picture near card…establish your language Shy/silent type? Make it fun…act it out Scan and email copy of near care beforehand Letter chart Whole Chart vs. Whole Line vs. Single Letter

10 Visual Acuities Watch your patient If you looked away and they got a letter, assume they peaked Get rid of the paddle Head control technique

15 Keeping the Patient’s Attention Be prepared & organized Discuss with your doctor what instruments they will need for a pediatric exam and have them out and ready to go Keep it Moving…have a plan. Strategies when doctor is running behind Kid’s Welcome Area
