Visit Objectives “ We believe that every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability and circumstances.” Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto, DCSF (formerly DfES)

What is There to See and Do? Pompeii This is one of the most famous ancient sites in the world. Almost 2000 years ago, Mount Vesuvius errupted, covering Pompeii in ash. The nature of the explosion – a build up of gases due to the outlet being blocked – meant that the residents of the town had no warning of the coming disaster. Life has been preserved as it was 2000 years ago, and excavations are ongoing. Plaster cast was poured in the holes in the ash created by bodies, and the result is realistic models of the people buried by the ash.

What is There to See and Do? Mount Vesuvius Take a trip to the top of Mount Vesuvius, the volcano that dominates the skyline of the Amalfi Coast. You can walk to the top of the mountain, and see close up the volcano that erupted and buried Pompeii almost 2000 years ago.

What is There to See and Do? Herculaneum The eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD buried this town in an airtight layer of solidified volcanic mud, unlike the volcanic ash of Pompeii which took a while to settle and become compressed. Excavations have revealed the ancient town, and have revealed facts such as diet, clothing and furniture

What is There to See and Do? Pozzuoli A spa town in the centre of the Phlegraean Fields west of Naples. An area of bubbling volcanic activity, the town of Pozzuoli has the remains of Roman market places and an amphitheatre which was the third largest in the ancient world. Here exotic animals were shipped in to the towns port and used in contests.

What is There to See and Do? Solfatara The Solfatara of Pozzuoli is without a doubt the most interesting volcano of the Phlegreaen Fields, an area north of Naples made up by approximately 40 ancient volcanoes. The bubbling mud pit is made up by rainwater and vapour condensation, which mix with the clay type material present on the surface of the Volcano crater

What is There to See and Do? Paestum A town near Salerno, this was founded by the Greeks in the early sixth century BC, and originally called Poseidonia. The ruins of the town, and the Roman amphitheatre can be visited.

What is There to See and Do? Roman Villa of Oplontis This is an ancient Roman Villa that is famous for it’s paintings in the Pompeii style. The villa is located at Torre Annunziata, about 10 minutes from Pompeii.

What is There to See and Do? The Caves of Capri The caves of Capri were caused by splitting, rockslides, defacing, water erosion, and wave action. The tour around the island of Capri and the visit to the caves commences at Marina Grande.

Our Accommodation and Meal Arrangements Accommodation Name [accommodation details] Meal Arrangements Full board or half board meals are eaten at the hotel. Note: If any dietary requirements need to be catered for, please let me know in advance.

Travel Tips Passport: All students travelling must hold a full passport. [In this space, please enter any visa requirements for the country your group is visiting, including any countries en-route. It is imperative that you advise students and parents on whether visas will be required. If you have any doubts, please contact the relevant embassy to check visa requirements, especially for non-British nationals. This could equally be relevant for British nationals dependent on the destination. You will need to apply in good time, as non-issue of visas is not covered under the cancellation section of your insurance, and you may not be allowed to travel as a result.] [If you will have a Collective Passport for your group, please say so here.] If you have any doubts about passports or visa requirements, please see me at the end of this presentation.

Travel Tips Money: The currency in Naples is the Euro We recommend that students take [£XXX] with them on the visit in [cash/travellers cheques].

Travel Tips European Health Insurance Cards (EHIC) All NST tours are covered by travel insurance, but in addition all travellers should carry a European Health Insurance card. The new EHIC replaced the old E111 form in September 2005. Eligible group members will need to have the EHIC to benefit from the reciprocal health arrangements that have been established within the European Union and Switzerland. If required, card holders can receive medical treatment free of charge whilst on their visit, avoiding the need to claim back money from insurers. Children/wards are covered by a parent’s/guardian’s card. The card is valid for up to 5 years and there is no charge. Forms are available from Post Offices or on-line from www.dh.gov.uk/travellers.
