Timeline In 1979, the Iranian Revolution overthrew the government and began the new Islamic Republic. In September 1980, Iraq launched attacks on Iran and the fighting began in earnest. By late September 1980, Iraq began a massive invasion of Iran along the country's southwestern border with Iraq. By 1984, Iraq had lost an estimated 150,000 soldiers, while Iran had lost twice that many. The end came on July 18, when Iran accepted UN Resolution 598 calling for an immediate cease-fire, though minor Iraqi attacks continued for a few more days after the truce came into effect on July 20, 1988.

5 Themes Applied to Conflicts ➔ Region: The region where Iran and Iraq is a region which has an abundance of crude oil underneath it. This makes countries outside of the region attracted to the area which might create conflict. Countries in the area must also compete with each other for profit and resources. ➔ Place: The countries of Iraq and Iran are placed in an area where ethnic conflict has been going on for many centuries. This makes the area even more available for even more conflict between ethnicities. ➔ Location: The location of Iran and Iraq are next to each other so conflict is easier to transfer across the two countries. This also shorten the time it takes to create a lot of damage in an area. ➔ Human-Environment Interaction: Iran and Iraqis have been setting up mines against each other and invading countries to neutralize enemies. These mine not only destroy and kill the people they are directed at, but they also destroy nearby important natural features. ➔ Movement: Nations around the world have been sent to fight in Iraq and Iran because of National interests which reside there. One of these interests is the large amount of crude oil underneath the surface which could be damaged.

2 Hypothesis Solutions to Resolve Conflict ●Set a physical barrier between Iraq and Iran so countries are harder to invade and Sunni and Shiite Muslims have their own area. ●Setup complete martial law in both areas and impose a goverment which emcompasses laws for both religions. http://acelebrationofwomen.org/tag/middle-east/feed/ icmu.nyc.gr
