4 Who is it for? technician and manager of water systems researchers which don't develop modeling codes students at all levels (engineers/managers of tomorrow) WDNetXL is currently used by students at Technical University of Bari (MsC in Civil and Environmental Engineering) to carry out water system design and optimization within the course. WDNetXL allows for interactive lessons where students are involved in real time on the networks analysis through the user-friendly environment of MS-Excel WDNetXL Users and Motivations The implementation of WDNetXL functions as MS-Excel add-in allows to: transfer and disseminate just in time of tools developed by technical research; use a familiar and unique work environment for different applications; use a work environment that allows for analysis of input/output data; customize the work environment to peculiar needs; customize functions to specific needs.

14 WDNetXL is a software designed for engineers and managers of today and tomorrow (engineering students); The mission is to transfer up-to-date research results to users in an efficient and user-friendly manner; WDNetXL implements several tools for analyzing water networks developed and tested by IHG; The package WDNetXL is constantly evolving and is easy to update; The use of WDNetXL is easy to learn because it is implemented in MS- Excel (fully customizable); WDNetXL produces different types of outcomes that can be used for traditional (paper) and innovative (hypertext and website) technical drawings. WDNetXL Summary and conclusions

15 ANN-MOGA is a paradigm for optimal construction of artificial neural networks (ANN) it is based on a MOGA approach for the construction of ANN; it allows the modeling of complex phenomena by ANN also for non-expert users; models retrieved are a trade-off between accuracy and complexity (number of parameters); models produced are not affected by overfitting and curse of dimensionality, as usual for ANN; (under certain conditions) it allows the selection of ANN models based on physical insights; ANN MOGA-XL is a MS-Excel add-in It can be used as a MS-Excel function ; It does not need any additional software; It is easily upgradeable and customizable; Research & Transfer ANN MOGA-XL

16 EPR is a data-mining technique that combines the effectiveness of GA with the robustness of numerical regression it produces models as symbolic mathematical expressions; it implements a multi-objective research paradigm based on GA; the optimal models returned are a trade-off between accuracy and parsimony; it allows the physical interpretation of the produced modeling structures; it allows the modeling of complex phenomena, both dynamic and static; it has a wide range of applications, from hydraulic engineering to environmental engineering, from geotechnical to structural engineering. EPR MOGA-XL is a MS-Excel add-in It can be used as a MS-Excel function ; It does not need any additional software; It is easily upgradeable and customizable; Research & Transfer EPR MOGA-XL
