ASSURE MODEL
2
Objectives of the lesson By the end of the lesson student should be able to: Systematicaly plan for a learning experience using the ASSURE model. Describe the three areas that contribute to learner differences Describe major diffrences in learning styles Formulate measurable objectives for instruction Identify, create, modify and utilize technology based learning materials Describe how to evaluate the effectiveness of the new learning experience
3
ASSURE MODEL; INTRODUCTION The ASSURE model is a systematic process aimed at helping the instructor focus on incorporating the use of media and technology within the classroom environment (virtual or real) ASSURE model is a model which assure learning
4
A Analyze learners S State objectives S Select methods, media and materials U Utilize media and materials R Require learner participations E Evaluate and revise
5
Questions asked when applying ASSURE model Who is your audience? What are your objectives? What are the methods, materials and media you will use? How can you and your learners make best use of the materilas How will you get your learners involved in learning? How will you evaluate both the learners and your instruction? What should you revise if you do the presentation again?
6
Learner differences Understanding the differences between learners is key to designing an effective learning experience. If we succeed in knowing who our learners are,we will be able to do the rest properly
7
Formulating MEASURABLE objectives When formulating objectives, it is crucial that a learning objectives to be clear, concise and provide an objective description of what learners will be able to do at the end of the instruction
8
Identifying, modifying and creating technology based learning materials First step before identifying the learning resource to be used is to decide on the method of instruction such as stimulation,demonstration,dril-and – practice or collaborative discussions. In other words, we need to be able to anticipate wether the instruction is for classroom-based learning or self- learning, whether the learners have the prior knowledge and whether learners will have access to necessary facilities.
9
Modifying existing materials We can find existing materials to use and if they are not 100 percent relevant we can modify them accordingly to suit our instructional requirements. We have to consider learner differences and determine our instructional strategies to make the instructions as effective as possible.
10
Designing new materials When designing new materials (smaldino,Russel,Heinch and Molenda (2005,p.60),consider the following 1. Objectives 2. Audience 3. Cost 4. Technical expertise 5. Equipment 6. Facilities 7. Time
11
Showmanship Showmanship is about getting things to work the way you want them to work right from the minute you start. There are two stages of showmanship: Getting ready and presenting A. Getting ready for the presentation getting ready includes Planning Rehearsing Setting up
12
B. Presenting The following are useful tips for prsenters 1. Voice 2. Eye contact 3. Delivery 4. Visuals
13
Evaluating the effectiveness of the learning experience Once you have conducted the learning session, you will want to evaluate your own work and get feedback from learners so that you can improve your course or programme Feedback on new or innovative learning experience will be most necessary so as to make sure that the learners have met the learning objectives and if not, determine how and where we should improve
14
When evaluating, the following items may be considered as part of the survey items List three strengths of the session List three weaknesses of the session If the session was considered again, what would you want done differently What did you think should be covered in this session that was not covered?
