LIGHTNING SIGNIFICANT HAZARD LIGHTNING SAFETY PROCEDURES More Education Needed!

Lightning Significant Hazard LIGHTNING: The Underrated Weather Hazard! 2nd Leading Cause of Storm Deaths in U.S. (~ 100 / Year) More than Hurricanes and Tornadoes Combined! Injures ~ 1,000 / Year in U.S. Often Severe Life-Long Crippling Injuries Lightning Causes $5 Billion in Damage Each Year in U.S. Yet Lightning Safety Receives Surprisingly Little Attention!

Lightning Significant Hazard  54,000 degrees  The National Weather Service (NWS) estimates that 100,000 thunderstorms occur annually.  For each death caused by lightning, roughly 10 more people are injured.

Lightning Significant Hazard  The typical length of a thunderstorm cell is 20 minutes  Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm  One-third of lightning deaths occur when activities are resumed prematurely.

How Far is 10 Miles?

Lightning Safety Procedures Lightning Safety Group Recommendations

SOAP Lightning Safety Procedures

Lightning Can Strike Long Distances! Even Outside the Rain! If You Can Hear Thunder, Seek Shelter! “Bolt From The Blue” Lightning Safety Procedures

 High lightning risk areas: swimming pools, parks, and recreation activities, golf courses, and civic outdoor events especially those that attract large crowds.  Picnic shelters, dugouts, sheds, and other partially open or small structures often found in these settings are not safe shelter during thunderstorms.

Unsafe Locations High Places / Open Fields Isolated Trees Towers / Poles (Light Poles, Flag Poles, Telephone Poles, Etc.) Unprotected Pavilions, Rain / Picnic Shelters Baseball Dugouts Convertible Cars Golf Carts Water (Swimming Pool, Ocean, Lake, Rivers, Etc.) Indoor / Outdoor Pools Bleachers (Metal Or Wood) Metal Fences / Structures Lightning Safety Procedures

Avoid Trees ! Do NOT Go Under Trees To Keep Dry! If You Can Hear Thunder, Seek Shelter!

Lightning Safety Procedures Avoid Water Activities Swimming Boating Beaches Doubly Dangerous! Fishing Others If You Can Hear Thunder, Seek Shelter!

Lightning Safety Procedures Avoid Wide Open Areas Sports Fields Playgrounds Parking Lots Beaches Others If You Can Hear Thunder, Seek Shelter!
