ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators Report from the chairman M. Krammer HEPHY, Vienna, Austria November 21, 2013RECFA CERN1

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators RECFA visit to Hungary November 21, 2013RECFA CERN2 Very active Hungarian community, several projects led by young group leader. Very visible experimental contributions to CMS, ALICE, TOTEM, ASACUSA, NA61 Focus on heavy ion and QCD physics High significance of theory in Hungary, very large and successful community. Detector and accelerator R&D very promising, new groups with MTA postdoctoral program. CERN remote Tier 0 center at the Wigner Research Center for physics in Budapest! Issues discussed: Support for Tier 2 level computing, internationalization of Hungarian scientific society, cooperation between universities and institutes of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Oct. 4, 2013

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators Activities of ECFA in Connection with the European Strategy Mandate of ECFA includes “Monitoring of the ongoing implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics” Monitoring through country visits Sponsor Workshops (e.g. the HL-LHC workshop) Discussion on future (post-LHC) accelerators: – CLIC: continuous support through the ECFA LC study Presentations in RECFA on TLEP, V-LHC, etc.  – FCC (Future Circular Collider): REFCA strongly supports the proposed design study! Involvement of ECFA to be discussed. Goal: Have studies available at the time of the next European Strategy Update in sufficient details on physics case, technological feasibility and with stable cost estimates. November 21, 2013RECFA CERN3

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators RECFA composition RECFA has currently 24 representatives from countries, 5 ex-officio, 2 invitees (APPEC, EPS-HEPP), 1 observer (RU). Scientific Secretary of the Strategy Session of the CERN Council New procedural framework for the European Strategy for Particle Physics discussed in council. If approved (December Council) the function of Scientific Secretary will be abolished. Proposal to include SPC chairman Provide first hand information, closer connection ECFA-SPC November 21, 2013RECFA CERN4

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators ECFA meetings in 2014 Plenary ECFA meetings: 95 th PECFA July 24/25 at DESY 96 th PECFA November 20/21 at CERN RECFA visits: Israel April 10/11 in Tel Aviv / Jerusalem Germany May 9/10 in Bonn UK November 7/8 November 21, 2013RECFA CERN5

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators Material for other agenda items….. November 21, 2013RECFA CERN6

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators LCC Organization November 21, 2013RECFA CERN7

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators European LCB Members DG CERN (R. Heuer) Director Particle Physics DESY (J. Mnich) Representative of Russia (Director Dubna, V.A. Matveev) Two representatives from the European community, nominated by RECFA and endorsed by PECFA (Nov. 22/23) – One person representing Accelerator physics (L. Rivkin) – One person representing Detector and Physics (F. LeDiberder) Both ILC and CLIC activities should be represented by the two community representatives, aiming for a proper balance of the two communities in the overall representation. + “European Advisory Board” to be set up November 21, 2013RECFA CERN8 Following a suggestion from Guy, call it Forum (better describes the purpose….)

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators European LC Forum Purpose Act as a bidirectional information channel from the European members of the LCB to the Linear Collider community in Europe. Membership Senior members of the European Linear Collider community will be invited to join and participate in the forum.(i.e. start with the list of colleagues nominated through RECFA) The forum is open to all members of the European Linear Collider community. A web based application procedure will be implemented. (e.g. a designated person decides to accept or reject an application, to prevent abuses) Activities Create a web space to share relevant documents from the LCB Organise regular video meetings before/after LCB meetings November 21, 2013RECFA CERN9

ECFA European Committee for Future Accelerators Status associate member states * in ECFA Proposal: Invite new associate member states to give a presentation to PECFA Invite them to become Observer in PECFA and in the open sessions of the RECFA country visits. Participation to PECFA meetings and discussions, but no voting rights. RECFA Country visit on invitation, no visits in regular intervals (possibly a visit following the accession). November 21, 2013RECFA CERN10 * Countries which are not in the pre-stage of full member states
