Diabetes TOPIC

Diabetes is a disease that affects your body’s ability to produce or use insulin. Insulin is a hormone. When your body turns the food you eat into energy (also called sugar or glucose), insulin is released to help transport this energy to the cells. Insulin acts as a “key.” Its chemical message tells the cell to open and receive glucose. If you produce little or no insulin, or are insulin resistant, too much sugar remains in your blood. Blood glucose levels are higher than normal for individuals with diabetes. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2.glucose DIABETES

Concept Of Diabetes Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin.

Causes Of Diabetes The reasons of diabetes is basically Genetics, diet, obesity and lack of exercise may play a role in developing diabetes, especially Type 2 diabetes.

Types Of Diabetes Type 1 diabetes Type 2 diabetes Pre diabetic Potential diabetic Gestational diabetes

Classification of Diabetes Type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent) requires insulin to treat, is typically developed as a child or young adult, and is a disease that destroys pancreatic cells meaning no insulin production is possible. Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent diabetes) is considerably more common and typically affects people over the age of 45, who are also overweight. Those suffering from type 2 are unable to produce enough insulin, and sugar builds up in the bloodstream.

Oral Medications and Weight Loss Surgery Can Help Through medications Reduce glucose production by the liver Slow the absorption of carbohydrates from the small intestine Increase insulin production by the pancreas Increase the insulin sensitivity of cells People who have undergone gastric bypass surgery appear to have high rates of cure.

Insulin Injections May Be Necessary Essential for those with type 1 diabetes Essential for people with type 2 diabetes whose blood glucose levels cannot be adequately controlled with other treatment options Insulin cannot be taken in pill form because it is a protein and would be digested in the gastrointestinal tract. Most people use an insulin infusion pump.

Consider your risk factors. If you are at high risk, talk to your health care provider about diabetes screening. If you are overweight, lose weight. Exercise. Consume a low fat, low sodium, high fiber diet.

Take care

THANK YOU!
