LESSON 2 STARTER Key words: Team, collaborate, build, plan, tools, teamwork. Learning objective: Work in teams to develop a high quality product solution. Use a range of tools and follow plans carefully to produce a finished product. Communicate as a team to create a working outcome. In this lesson you will work in a team of four. Each of you will have a specific task to carry out, and at the end, you will combine your individual parts together to create a finished product. You must follow instructions carefully, as any mistake you make as an individual could result in a failure as a team. ROLE 1 Assemble the metal base frame using pop rivets, nuts and screws. Test the frame is sturdy. ROLE 2 Build the drive chain of gears and wheels. Read up and learn how to connect to the cortex. ROLE 3 Assemble the tower and Clawbot arm. Check the arm runs off the motor drive directly. ROLE 1 Put batteries on charge, connect the controller to the cortex, bend the metal bars to shape.
6
Clawbot Building Getting Started Before you do anything, open up the box, set out all the parts on a flat table, and remove/bin all the packaging. You should find the following groups of items: - Metal for the structure - Plastic wheels and gears for motion - Motors and motor controllers for drive - Metal/plastic fittings for joining parts - Metal tools including wrenches and allen keys If you have access to a small tray, store your parts in different compartments so that screws and other parts are not mixed up.
7
Clawbot Building Using your instructions You can take any part, metal or other, and lay it onto your instruction booklet, and you will find that it will match in size and location of features. This is an excellent help to ensure you don’t use the wrong part of the a stage of assembly. Don’t forget to make use of your tray or organise the fittings (you could use the part names from your instructions to label different compartments of your tray)
8
Clawbot Building Fixings You are afforded a set of tools for your Clawbot build. A wrench and an allen key. Wrench Allen key
9
Clawbot Building How to build Certain fixings and assembly approaches only work with certain tools. Here is a run down of the tools and the making approaches: 5/64” Allen Key For fitting smaller motor screws. Wrench For turning or holding nuts in place. 5/64” Allen Key For fitting collar worm screws. 3/32” Allen Key For fitting structural screws. By hand For fitting pop rivets. By hand For fitting flat bearings to the metal frame.
10
Clawbot Building Build as a team Decide who will take on role 1, 2, 3 and 4, and individually, begin to build your Clawbot. Do this all the while talking to one another and helping each other by sharing tools and advice. ROLE 1 Assemble the metal base frame using pop rivets, nuts and screws. Test the frame is sturdy. ROLE 2 Build the drive chain of gears and wheels. Read up and learn how to connect motors to the cortex. ROLE 3 Assemble the tower and Clawbot arm. Check the arm runs off the motor drive directly. ROLE 4 Put batteries on charge, fit battery straps, bend the metal bars to shape, fit cortex. Combine all your parts together to build the final Clawbot [Use the Role sheets to complete your individual roles]
11
LESSON 2 PLENARY As a class, let us consider the following questions? A. Why is working as a team better than working on a task independently? B. What was challenging about the Clawbot build? C. How did having a role within a team help you build the Clawbot quickly? D. What name would you apply to your role in the team (E.g. builder)?
12
Summary Today you have: Learnt how to build a Clawbot from start to finish. Developed knowledge about the VEX platform, how it works and how you might adapt future robots. Learnt the importance of working in a team rather than as an individual. Learning objective: Work in teams to develop a high quality product solution. Use a range of tools and follow plans carefully to produce a finished product. Communicate as a team to create a working outcome.
