1 How useful questions: The hand Scotland at War & Peace 1900 - 1945

2 Success Criteria  I will work as part of a group to try and understand what makes a history source useful.  I will complete a diagram that will help me answer a “How useful” question  I will be able to give a full answer to a how useful question which I will retain in my profile.  I will peer mark other pupils to test my skills.

3 What does the Question want? How useful questions ask you to work out if a source is helpful/of use. The question can be worth 5 or 6 marks. How useful questions usually start with: “Evaluate the usefulness of ……..” “Assess the usefulness of …..”

4 How to begin  Always start your answer with the words: “This source is quite useful because…” OR “Source A is very useful because….”

5 How useful questions – THE HAND WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHY? HOWEVER?

6 WHO? = 1 MARK Who wrote this source?  Is the person writing the source well informed/ an expert?  Is he/she an eyewitness?.

7 WHEN? = 1 MARK When was this source written?  Look at the date above the source.  When was the source written – at the time of the event?.

8 WHY? = 1 MARK Why did someone go to the trouble of writing this source?  Why did this person write this source?  What does he/she want us to know about?.

9 WHAT? = UP to 3 MARKS What information is in the source?  What does the source tell us that helps answer the question?  Write down as many pieces of useful information as you can from the source  Never copy the whole source!!

10 HOWEVER = UP to 3 MARKS What information is missing from the source?  You must use your own recall here.  It is your job to point out information that is missing from the source..

11 Check the Marking You must know what you get marks for :  Giving the importance of the author, date and purpose.  Picking out useful answers from the source.  From memory pointing out what is missing from the source. 1 Mark each up to 3 MARKS 1Mark for each answer from the source up to 3 MARKS 1Mark for each answer from recall up to 3 MARKS

12 Example Question. Source A is from an Edinburgh newspaper in 1923. By their great numbers the Irish have stolen the jobs of many Scots workers or have helped cut their pay. As their numbers increase the problems of our slum areas get worse as the Irish crowd together in their poverty and dirt helping spread disease. 13 Peer Marking  Once you have completed your answer you will swap your workbook with someone from another group.  You will mark their answer using the Marking Instructions that your teacher will give you.  Give it a mark out of 5.  If the answer is less than 5 then you must write suggestions so that your fellow pupil can get full marks e.g. “ Mention why the date is important”.

What -is in the source  The Irish are stealing Scottish jobs.  The Irish are lowering wages of Scottish workers.  The Irish are spreading disease.  Our city is being overrun However – what is missing from the source  Some employers thought Irish were good workers.  Many Scots disliked their Roman Catholic religion.  Scots thought they drank too much  Scots thought they were dirty/ignorant/stupid.

16 Example Question Source A was written by Jorge Cicvcenko and describes the assassination at Sarajevo, 28 th June 1914  General Potiorek shouted to the driver that we were going the wrong way. As he reversed, there were shots. Countess Sophie was hit. I thought she had fainted from shock. Franz Ferdinand shouted “Sophie, Sophie, don’t die. Live for our children”. These words will live with me forever. Q1. Assess the usefulness of Source A as evidence of the assassination at Sarajevo on 28 th June 1914. 5 MARKS
