2 Monday, April 4 th - Sentence Reading Tuesday, April 5 th – Mathematics April 6 th & 7 th –Make up Days **It is critical that all students be present on the day of the test. Students will feel more comfortable taking the test with their homeroom teacher in their classroom environment.

3 What is the SAT 10? The SAT 10 is used to measure student achievement in reading and math. Data is used to compare students nationwide. Important Information

5 Reading Subtest… -Will measure students ability to comprehend single, sentences and two related sentences.

6 Reading Subtest… -The reading test is untimed. Students may take their time to check their work and make sure their work is completed.

8 Phonemic Awareness The knowledge that all letters stand for a sound. When sounds are put together, words are formed. Students must know all their letters and sounds.

9 Comprehension Comprehension is understanding what is read. Oral comprehension is always higher than independent reading comprehension. In order to help your child with reading comprehension, it is important to ask questions while reading. For example: Who are the characters? Where did the story take place? What is the problem? What happened in the beginning, middle, end of the story? etc.

10 Phonics The ability to put letter sounds together to make words. Example: -at word families b+at = bat c+ at= cat

11 Vocabulary How to build vocabulary? Oral Comprehension Oral language- daily experiences Discussions in class Reading books High Frequency words

12 Fluency Fluency is how fast or slow can read at their independent reading level. Fluency can be practiced through choral reading; reading together with your child. Modeling good reading is also beneficial to children to understand what good reading should sound like.

13 Comprehension Comprehension is understanding what is read. Oral comprehension is always higher than independent reading comprehension. In order to help your child with reading comprehension, it is important to ask questions while reading. For example: Who are the characters? Where did the story take place? What is the problem? What happened in the beginning, middle, end of the story? etc.

14 How to help your child succeed in reading Read to or with your child every day. Demonstrate the importance of reading by example. Use time in the car, at restaurants, supermarkets to show how important it is to be able to read. Create flashcards with sight words and practice them everyday as part of the home learning assignment.

15 How to help your child succeed in reading Use word families to help children learn how to segment and blend sounds together. Read nursery rhymes Visit the library and use age and grade appropriate books Create your own home library of books that your children will enjoy reading. Books of interest, such as dinosaurs or sea animals, etc. Make reading together a fun event that your children will look forward to each day.

22 Mathematics The math portion of the SAT is orally administered. The students must listen to the question and comprehend what is being asked of them. The questions may not be repeated. It is important that they are attentive to the question being asked.

27 Addition and Subtraction Students must be able to subtract using different terminology such as: take away, minus, less than, and the difference of. Students must be able to add using different terminology such as: in all, all together, the sum of, and join.

28 Counting forward and backwards 1, ___ 3, 4, 5, ____ 7, 8, ___. 10, 9, 8 ____, 6, ___, 4.

29 Time and Clock Students need to be able to read a clock to the hour and half hour on an analog and a digital clock.

30 Calendar Students must be able to read a calendar and identify the month of the year and days of the week. What day of the week is the 13 th ?

34 Measurement Students should be able to measure in inches. Understand how to use a ruler and other measuring tools in its appropriateness, such as: a measuring cup and a jug.

36 The day before the test… -Make sure your child goes to bed early the night before the test. -Keep a calm, routine the night before the test.

37 The day of the test… -Make sure your child has a healthy breakfast (avoid sugary meals). -Arrive to school on time. -Send a jacket or sweater so that your child can be comfortable during the test. -Gently encourage your child to do their best!
