Rise of Christianity Jesus of Nazereth was a Jewish prophet that traveled throughout Judea, preaching what would become Christianity.

The Teachings of Jesus Jewish Prophet –Believed he had been sent to fulfill the salvation promised them by God. Big Idea = Transformation of inner person –“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” –“Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Death and Resurrection Jesus’ teachings stirred controversy. –People feared Jesus would lead a revolt against Rome. Crucified. –Turned in by opponents. –Ordered by Pontius Pilate, Roman procurator of Judea. Resurrection –Followers believe he appeared to them 3 days later. –Proves he is “Messiah”

The Spread of Christianity Apostles –Leaders in the Christian community spread its teachings to other areas of the Roman empire. Gospels –Apostles’ teachings – oral tradition, then written between 40 and 100 A.D. –Paul Major apostle who brought the message to non-Jews as well.

Christianity and the Romans At first, the Romans paid little attention to the Christians. When the Christians refused to worship the Roman gods, the Roman government viewed them as traitors! Christian Persecution –(Began with Nero around 54 A.D.) –Christians were persecuted for not worshipping the Roman state gods.

The Growth of Christianity After the death of Jesus, Christianity slowly grew from a small cult to a religion of which ¼ of Romans practiced… Why was Christianity able to attract and maintain so many followers? 1)Actively worked to spread word & gain converts 2)More personal than Roman religion “Peace” and “forgiveness,” not “anger” and “wrath” 3)Fulfilled need to belong Rome itself was too big Gave hope during failing empire 4)Attracts poor and powerless Heaven promised to all

Christianity Becomes Widespread Constantine –Sees “vision” at Battle of Milvian Bridge, 312 A.D. –Issues Edict of Milan, 313 A.D. Tolerance of Christianity –Council of Nice, 325 A.D. Orthodox Christianity established. –Bible –Converts to Christianity, 337 A.D.
