Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Column CO 2 Objective: To construct a prototype instrument for deployment on aircraft that will demonstrate the feasibility of an innovative technique for measuring column CO 2 abundances in the atmosphere. Relation to Earth Science Strategy: 1) What trends in atmospheric constituents are driving global climate and 2) How well can cycling of carbon through the Earth system be modeled and how reliable are predictions of future atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane?

Satellite Passive (reflected solar) Sensing CO 2 in the atmosphere Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Column CO 2 Space-based Measurement Approach

Langley Airborne A-Band Spectrometer Calculated CO 2 Spectrum Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Column CO 2 Measurement Approach-Spectra

Fabry-Perot Etalon Spectrometer Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Column CO 2 Instrument Approach Fabry-Perot Filter Characteristics  nn

Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Column CO 2 Status: Laboratory bench top instrument assembled, CO 2 channel ready for ambient testing.

Fabry-Perot Interferometer for Column CO 2 Schedule: Benchtop sensitivity testing - FY02, Design and fabricate aircraft version - FY03, Assemble, test, fly, and analyze data - FY04. Budget: ~ $1.5M / 3 years Future Plans: Deploy in planned interagency North American Carbon Program, FY04-05, and future aircraft campaigns. Pathway to Space: Potential robust, low-cost space instrument Combined with array detector, ideal for geosynchronous imaging Variety of other species amenable to technique including CO, CH 4
