2.  Charismatic Large Carnivore at the Apex of the Food Chain.  Acts as an umbrella species for conserving the biodiversity of forested ecosystems.  From controlling smaller predators to protecting river banks from erosion to providing nutrient hotspots, it appears that top predators are indispensible to a working ecosystem.

4.  Tiger Mortality - 66 in 2009 and 8 till today in 2010. (source:- http://www.tigernet.nic.in/Alluser/Statistics.aspx?OYear=2010 &MorS=M&Animal_name=tiger )  Tiger mortality in 2009 was highest in the past several years.  This year had started on a grim note for tiger conservation efforts, too — three tiger deaths have been reported in the first six days of 2010.  17 of the total 37 tigers reserves in India were on the verge of losing their tiger population.

5.  The death of Indian tigers, whose population is now estimated to be close to 1,000, down from the official figure of 1,411 in 2006, could also put the survival of 1 lakh families, dependant on tiger-inhabited forest areas for livelihood, at risk.

6.  SOCIAL EFFECTS :-  Tiger is our national animal hence every indian is emotionally attached to it. Extinction of tigers will cause a very huge imapct on us socially.  International organizations like WWF provides huge funds to india’s tiger conservation programs, if tigers go extinct then it may force them to withdraw the funds

7.  Tigers are the indicator of integrity of food chain If they go extinct then the no. of preys will increase and it will badly affect food chain.  Increasing number of preys like deer will affect the grasslands as they will cause more soil erosion at the river banks.

8.  The deer population will increase to such an extent that plants will reduce in number drastically and the habitat will become unsuitable for other herbivores also with more competition  It will also cause accidents in the areas where highways are passing through the forest as these preys can go anywhere

9.  Tigers protect all the species living in their habitat area as no other predator can kill tiger’s preys.  They also protect forests from humans as if the tigers are not there humans may cut the forests and make it agriculture land. And deforestation may lead to climate change.

10.  We have Collected data from various sources.  We are spreading a word about it through our blog.  We have contacted some NGO’s working for tigers to spread awareness in Gwalior region

11.  As an ECOSD student, we can only spread awareness about the effects and sustainable development.  We will write a letter or an email to editors of popular newspapers and magazines, and can ask them to support the cause and highlight the effects of tigers endangermanet as there is not much awareness about this subject
