LEGALISM Trust in Jesus + Obedience = God’s Acceptance CHRISTIANITY Trust in Jesus = God’s Acceptance + Growing Desire for Obedience.
4
Legalism: is about me Gospel: is about Jesus Legalism: what I do Gospel: what Jesus has done Legalism: my works Gospel: resting in the finished work of Jesus

“The reason the book of Galatians has such a radical, life-changing message is that it pronounces a curse from God not on atheistic or agnostic outsiders but on professing Christians who try to serve God in a way that diminishes his grace and cultivates their own pride.” – John Piper
6
Run, John, and work, the law commands, Yet finds me neither feet nor hands, But sweeter news the gospel brings, It bids me fly and gives me wings! -- John Berridge (1716–1793)
7
JUSTIFICATION The gracious act of God – by which God declares – a sinner – righteous – in Jesus Christ
8
ROOTED “We do not work for God’s acceptance – we work from it.” (Galatians 1:6-7)
9
GROWING “Moving from rows to circles.” (Galatians 2:11)
10
REACHING “Invite others to the table.” (Galatians 2:12-14)
11
O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? It was before your eyes that Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified. 2 Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
12
4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain? 5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— 6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?
13
7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
14
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”
15
12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— 14 so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith. -- GALATIANS 3:1-14
16
“In what ways are you trying to perfect yourself?”
17
“What, if lost, would leave you feeling incomplete?”
18
VIVIFICATION
19
MORTIFICATION
20
“We desperately need to let go of what WAS and walk into what IS.”
21
Don’t these things happen among you just as they happened with Abraham? He believed God, and that act of belief was turned into a life that was right with God.
22
7-8 Is it not obvious to you that persons who put their trust in Christ (not persons who put their trust in the law!) are like Abraham: children of faith? It was all laid out beforehand in Scripture that God would set things right with non-Jews by faith. Scripture anticipated this in the promise to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed in you.”
23
9 So those now who live by faith are blessed along with Abraham, who lived by faith—this is no new doctrine! -- Galatians 3:6-9 (THE MESSAGE)

Commitment – is me striving Surrender – is me submitting

Commitment – is me striving Surrender – is me submitting Commitment – is working for God Surrender – is God working through me Commitment – is about willpower Surrender – is about the Spirit’s power

“Theologically, anyone who says: I can be saved by obeying the law must then be prepared to really look at what the law commands. To love God wholly, we would have to obey the law wholly. To be blessed by God instead of cursed by Him, we would have to look at the law and satisfy its every demand. And that cannot be done. Objectively, attempting salvation-by-law- observance means we are cursed.
28
This means that, psychologically, everyone who is seeking to save themselves by their own performance will experience a curse subjectively. At the very least, attempting to be saved by works will lead to profound anxiety and insecurity, because you can never be sure that you are living up to your standards sufficiently.” – Tim Keller
