Overview Question: o How does social media affect a person’s self- esteem? Thesis: o Although social media can have positive affects, it is becoming a growing problem as people are valuing feedback from social networking sites over real life interactions.

Conversation Research by University of Salford, UK on effects of social media on self-esteem 50% of 298 participants said use of social networking sites made life worst Study done by the child advocacy group ‘Common Sense Media’ on teens and social media 1 in 5 teens said social media makes them feel more confident 1,000 13-17 year olds 28% said social media sites made the feel more outgoing and 29% made them feel less shy

Interesting Points The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery surveyed 2,700 doctors and 1 in 3 of them saw a spike in surgery requests for 2013, since social media was becoming more popular 13% of surgeons saw patients who mentioned procedures because they didn’t like appearance on Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat Only 5% of women naturally have the body type that American social media portrays

Conclusion/Solutions Social media can effect a persons self-esteem negatively if a person becomes too reliant on the content they get from it People need to limit their time on social networking sites People need to be aware of the strong effects social media can have on our feelings and realize that social media isn’t everything
