3 Mod 3 Ses 4 Workshop Review Environmental issues directly affect core humanitarian areas and the environmental impacts of disaster and conflict threaten people’s lives and livelihoods. Consideration of the environmental impacts of a project should be done at the earliest possible stage of the planning cycle. Post-disaster needs assessments should begin to address environmental issues and the linkages between human well-being and the environment at the earliest stages.

Disaster recovery projects in all sectors should incorporate activities that promote environmental protection and take advantage of opportunities to further human well-being by addressing the environment. Environmental impact assessment may be required by donors, government regulations, your own organization, or as part of normal due diligence.

5 Mod 3 Ses 4 Workshop Review (cont.) The standard EIA process has five components: 1. Review of project objectives and options 2. Gather environmental intelligence including consultation with relevant agencies and experts and a review of applicable laws and regulations 3. Assess environmental impacts 4. Design of mitigation measures 5. Action Several tools exist for conducting EIAs in humanitarian aid settings, such as the ESR & REA.
