1 Renaissance Art Lesson Two, Unit One Teacher’s Edition

2 Today’s Main Idea: The ideas of the Renaissance were evident in the art that was created during this time period. Renaissance ideas soon spread throughout Europe and can be seen in artwork from around the continent. After this lesson students will be able to compare and contrast the difference between Renaissance and Medieval Art and how this change in art reflected a change in society overall.

3 So…what is medieval? Medieval art is different from Renaissance art in both content and design Both of these reflect the overall change in society… we will talk more about this later!

4 Medieval art was almost always religious. –It was often used to teach people about religion

7 The Medieval Look… In architecture: -Flying Buttresses  Ex: Notre Dame – Paris, FR

8 Art: –Duller colors –Disproportioned body parts –No distinction in faces –2d appearance –Hieratic Scale Size of things are based on their importance, rather than their actual size

13 The Renaissance Factor… Renaissance art reflected the change in society and culture. It is one of the strongest signifiers of the growth of humanism

14 Characteristics of Renaissance Art: #1 Realism & Classical Influence: -Realistically portrays the human body -Human body in a natural pose -Shows influence of classical principles The David - Michelangelo

15 #2 Use of Perspective: -Shows that distant objects are farther away then those that are closer -Creates an illusion of 3d appearance -Lines in reality are parallel and meet at a point -The point is called the horizon
