2 DEFINITION OF SOCIAL GROUPS: “The emergence of three or more individuals into a pattern of goal orientation, characterized by an interrelationship of statuses and awareness of membership.”

4 SOCIALIZATION: Socialization is the lifelong process of social interaction through which individuals acquire a self-identify and the physical, mental, and social skills needed for survival in society. The content of socialization differs greatly from society to society.

6 FAMILY AS AGENT OF SOCIALIZATION The family is the most important agent of socialization in all societies.  Families use positive and negative sanctions to help teach right from wrong  The number of children in a household and birth order can influence individual socializations  Family socialization differs by culture

7 SCHOOL AS AGENT OF SOCIALIZATION Schools have played an increasingly important role in the socialization  Schools teach specific knowledge and skills and they also have a profound effect on a child’s self- image, beliefs and values  “The hidden curriculum” honoring competition, academic success, societal values, Etc.
