Reconnecting America Typology Recommendations Type A: Low Vulnerability + Emerging/Mature Market  In/near major job centers  Affluent population  Strong market, lack of existing affordable housing  Improve job access  Improve connectivity of station areas  Build new affordable stock  Develop affordable at adjacent MARTA stops with good access Type B: Moderate/High Vulnerability + Emerging/Mature Market  Greater mix of incomes present  Susceptible to displacement from strong market  Affordable housing preservation  Rent stabilization to help existing residents stay  Introduce new compact housing types  Station infrastructure Type C: Moderate Vulnerability + Emerging Market  Greater mix of incomes present but displacement an issue  Market not as strong but improving  Affordable housing creation  Affordable preservation  Invest in community assets, attractive to middle class residents Type D: Moderate/High Vulnerability + Emerging Market  Given weak market not likely to see development in short term  Improve access to jobs in other areas  Affordable housing creation  Affordable preservation  Expand jobs and services to increase services to existing households. Type E: High Vulnerability + Lagging Market  High percentage of low income households  Due to weak market limited short term housing investment  Station areas need improved access to jobs via transit  Improvements to station areas  Strengthen community assets

Services & Employment – Services should alleviate disparities in daily needs, focus on job opportunities within the local community, and encourage workforce development Housing Diversity – Infuse affordable housing into station areas where costs are prohibitive to low or moderate income households How can we help MARTA achieve equity?

Population Preservation & Expansion – Housing with substantial mixed-use components, with a goal of neighborhood/resident retention Balanced Community – Mixed-use development on undeveloped, under- developed and transitioning parcels – Incorporate affordable housing at AMI percentages matching community needs How can we help MARTA achieve equity?

Arts and Community Engagement Chris Appleton

WonderRoot is an arts organization that works to improve the cultural and social landscape of Atlanta through creative initiatives and community partnerships. WonderRoot does this work, in part, through a community-based public art process, which is why TFA and MARTA wanted to partner with them for EN ROUTE.

When you bring arts to a community development opportunity: 1)Potential is unlocked 2)Conversations begin or continue 3)Markets begin to revive 4)New perspectives of varying kinds emerge 5)Seeds for equity & social change are planted Creative Place Making: community builder & economic engine

1)King Memorial – Moderate vulnerability/Emerging Market High vulnerability/Lagging market (HV/LM) 2)HE Holmes 3)Oakland City 4)Vine City Based on typology work conducted by Reconnecting America, these station areas are not likely to see short term market rate investment in new housing, jobs or community resources. TFA focused on four station areas

“En Route” Mural Program Working in the TFA’s four target station areas, En Route has commissioned internationally recognized artist Fahamu Pecou to lead teams of residents in the development and creation of murals at the associated MARTA station. The resident advisors help select teams of supporting artists who help to create the mural. Resident advisors also engage in creating the content, context, messaging, and meaning for the art.
