13 9-11 MARZO 2008 TRIGENERATION : A MODERN TECHNOLOGY Trigeneration is a specific field of cogeneration systems that, besides producing electricity, you can use the waste heat energy from the cogeneration system for producing cooling energy, ie chilled water for air conditioning or industrial processes. A tri-generation system, as illustrated in the figure, is an energy system consisting of a cogeneration plant whose useful thermal energy is used, in whole or in part, to produce, by means of absorption refrigerators, chilled water for air conditioning or industrial processes. In other words, the exploitation of the useful heat produced by the cogeneration also for cooling allows to maximize the exploitation of thermal energy, making it convenient to use the plant for a greater number of hours per year.

14 9-11 MARZO 2008 The transformation of the thermal energy into cooling energy is made possible by the use of an absorption refrigeration cycle, whose operation is based on the transformation of the state of the refrigerant fluid in combination with the substance used as absorbent. The main pairs of refrigerant / absorbent used are water / lithium bromide and ammonia / water. Compared to the generation of electricity only, in a regeneration system of the overall performance increase is exploited because a greater percentage of the calorific value of the fuel. There is also to be considered that the conventional thermoelectric plants convert about 1/3 of the fuel energy (the rest is lost to heat), while in a plant regenerative more than 4/5 of the same energy is exploited, since the heat is recovered directly (operating CHP) or as a source for an absorption refrigeration (trigeneration vehicle is running)
