End of Course Exam- 40% Section I, Part A (25%) May 5, 2015 Suggested Time: 30 minutes One Source Provided Students are asked to analyze an argument using evidence. Prompt: 1. Identify the main idea of the author’s argument? 2. Identify the claims the author makes and explain how he or she uses them to establish his or her line of reasoning? 3. Evaluate the effectiveness of the evidence the author uses to support his or her argument.

End of Course Exam Section I, Part B (35%) May 5, 2015 Suggested Time: 60 minutes Two Sources Provided Students are asked to evaluate the effectiveness of two arguments on a similar question, problem, or issue. Each of the sources should present alternate, divergent, or contradictory perspectives. Prompt: “Read the following two articles carefully. Then, write an essay that evaluates the effectiveness of the two arguments, focusing on the relevance and credibility of the evidence and the validity of the lines of reasoning.”

End of Course Exam Section II (40%) May 5, 2015 Suggested Time: 90 Minutes Four Sources Provided Students are asked to build their own arguments using at least two of the four provided sources. Each of the four sources will explore a common theme through a different lens, allowing for multiple entry points for students to approach the topic.

End of Course Exam Section II Continued Prompt: “The following four (4) sources present multiple perspectives on the same issue or topic. Read the sources carefully, focusing on both the thematic connection among them and the different perspective each represents. Then, write a logically organized and well-reasoned argument that presents your own perspective on the thematic link you identified. You must incorporate at least two (2) of the sources provided. You may also use the other provided sources or draw upon your own knowledge. In your response, refer to the provided sources as Source A, Source B, Source C, or Source D, or by the author’s names.
