Background Level: P2 Topic: Jobs Task: Students write about their dream job Language Focus: Vocabulary: Jobs – people who help us Use the simple present tense to talk about usual practice

Planning Stage Time: 6 weeks before the teaching of the unit Aim: Use IT can enhance students’ learning Choose a challenging and interesting topic to initiate students to learn Why we choose the topic: We can arrange this topic as the last unit of the school year so that students can recycle the language they have learnt Greater exposure of different jobs (not only limited to the jobs mentioned on the textbook)

Consideration 1.How to choose right technology to help students' to learn? 2.How to incorporate IT resources in a real language learning classroom? 3.How to use IT resources to cater for learner diversity?

Usual practice of our school: Implementation Vocabulary building Read the text Learn the sentence Practise the language forms Writing

How we implemented the unit Vocabulary building Read the text Learn the sentence Practise the language forms Writing Song Hangman Matching game PowerPoint Flash cards Text book Drag and drop Use of posters 1,2,3 ( print-rich environment  )123  (using Netbook) Watch the videosvideos Jumbled sentences (Level 1, 2)12 Do speaking exercise before writing Power Point (My job) - Use a song to arouse students’ interest – the animation in the song strongly motivate the students - Use the hangman – to replace mechanic drill of spelling - Use the matching game to consolidate the vocabulary Let students learn the sentence structure and the use of vocabulary in different content - Drag and Drop - to consolidate the names of jobs and jobs duties through reading aloud while playing the game - Poster – students can read and collect information (e.g. name of the jobs, duties) to prepare for the writing - It is a group work   - Jumbled Sentence -Students work together and play together to consolidate the sentence structure   - More able students can help the less able ones (mixed ability grouping) - Individual work - Speaking – a kind of oral practice - Writing – the use of PowerPoint can help the less able ones to write

Students are collecting information at recess

Group Work Students are doing group work

Group work Students are enjoying the game

Findings Students can write more than expected and better than expected in the final product Use of technology can arouse student’ interest and consolidate their learning Reading aloud before playing games can help students to learn and consolidate what they have learnt Students can work out their mode of collaboration, e.g. more able students help the less able ones, less able ones wait for their chances to handle the Netbook

Students’ work New Ideas

Students’ work Talk about feelings

Students’ work Even less able students can write more than expected

Reflections – Impact on students Learning styles: Affect students’ learning styles, more exposure to the language but may cause confusion, e.g. use of term “fire-fighter” of “fireman” in the digital resources confuse some students Jumbled sentence game: Colour may be a distracter to students in selecting the answer Enhancement of learning Reuse of resources: Some students cannot remember the job names and job duties → Show the same PowerPoint at different stages of teaching to revise the vocabularyPowerPoint The game they play in the lesson, they can do it at home again Cooperative Learning: Students can work out the way to do Group work: Different ways of grouping can help, mixed ability groups will take turns to work, same level grouping compete among themselves

Reflections – Impact on teachers Difficulties: Technical problem: The NETbook can’t access to the Internet in the classroom. All materials need to be download in advance. Not all resources operate properly in all computers. Management: Students only concentrate on the work for a short period of time Discipline problem: students are too excited to work on the computer It is difficult to link from one task to another after using the e-learning resources. Do not use blog in final writing because do not want students to copy the writing to the blog. Only use the right technology for the right task not only use technology due to technology Benefits: Learn how to choose resources to suit students’ need A kind of professional development for teachers, the use of IT in class Teachers work closely when teaching this unit
