2  Colonel Edward M. House – Born in Houston (1858); Chief political advisor, closest friend of President Woodrow Wilson; known as Wilson’s “Right Hand” man.

3 1) Approximately 200,000 Texans fought in the war 2) 4 major military camps, and one major air field Kelly Field = San Antonio Camp Logan = Houston Camp MacArthur = Waco Camp Travis = San Antonio Camp Bowie = Fort Worth

4 1) Raised money to fund the war by purchasing Liberty Bonds and War Bonds 2) Rationed foods at home to feed troops abroad 3) Women joined the workforce 4) Increased manufacturing of products, especially those created from petroleum, agricultural resources (crops), cattle, sheep, goats

6 1) Approximately 500 women served as nurses and aides in War 2) Approximately 5000 Texans died in War 3) Texans sacrificed on the home front by rationing, volunteering for the Red Cross

7 1) Generally, most immigrants came to Texas for: a. Job opportunities b. Education (college, university) 2) Eastern Europeans: a. Jobs b. Escape religious persecution c. Settled in same locations as earlier Europeans, major urban areas

9 3) Latin Americans a. Jobs, escape economic depression/poor economies b. Escape political revolutions c. Settled in major urban areas 4) The workforce grew in Texas because of many new jobs that were created; this was a major economic factor that led to the urbanization of Texas.

11 1) Cattle ranching, farming, agricultural jobs decreased because of new technologies and changing demands of populations. 2) Oil and gas industry jobs increased because of changes/growth in transportation and products made from petroleum. Most products today are made from a byproduct of petroleum.

12 3) More people migrated from rural to urban areas for jobs in oil and gas industry. 4) Service industry jobs increased because more people were living in urban areas.
