Persuasive Speech
2
Everyone quietly think to themselves: WHY? If someone you cared about had only 11 hours and 53 minutes left to live what would tell them to do with them and WHY? On your handout make a poster-like drawing that describes how best a person should spend their last 12 hours (roughly) Know who this person is WHY Be sure to write notes on your poster the reasons WHY You have 7 minutes to answer in your drawing
3
Switching gears….It’s Journal Time! Has a salesman ever tried to sell you anything? What was his or her approach? What did they say to you? Were they persuasive? What could have made it more convincing?
4
Persuasive Genres You encounter persuasion every day. TV Commercials Letters to the Editor Junk mail Magazine ads College brochures Can you think of other persuasive contexts?
5
What is Persuasion? The art of persuasion is the art of finding the best available means of moving a specific audience in a specific situation to a specific decision There are:

What Next? Get into groups of 3 Use the illustrated explanation of the last 11 hours and 53 minutes and share After each has shared, on the back of one of your handouts categorize your responses of WHY into ethos, pathos, and logos Example: If Ms. O wants someone to perform onstage before they die, her why is because she knows theater can be a good experience. Therefore you would put her in the ethos category, because she would be considered credible on account she teaches theater. 10 minutes
9
Does it always work? Of course not! Some people come equipped with closed minds (They’ve already decided) Some people come with busy minds (They aren’t really listening to you) Some people will not agree with you (so if you can’t convince them, at least help them be sorry they can’t agree with you)
10
Steps for Effective Persuasion Understand your audience – why should we care? Support your opinion Know the various sides of your issue Respectfully address other points of view – Although some may say____, I have to disagree because… Find common ground with your audience – Interactive (raise your hand if you’ve ever…) Establish your credibility – Tell stories (personal ones are the best) – How have you experienced this or been involved?
11
Understanding Your Audience Help your audience relate to your topic Appeal to their hearts as well as their minds. – Use anecdotes when appropriate – Paint your topic in with plenty of detail – Involve the listener’s senses in these sections
12
Researching an Issue Find common ground with your audience For example: Point of Opposition: You might support a war, whereas your audience might not. Common ground: Both sides want to see their troops come home.
13
Cite Sources with Some Clout Which source would a reader find more credible? – The New York Times – http://www.myopinion.com Which person would a reader be more likely to believe? – Joe Smith from Fort Wayne, IN – Dr. Susan Worth, Prof. of Criminology at Purdue University
14
Tactics to Avoid Don’t lecture or talk down to your audience Don’t make threats or “bully” your reader Don’t employ overly obvious guilt trips Be careful if using the second person, “you”
15
Researching an Issue Become familiar with all sides of the charity. -find common ground for the class -understand the background of the charity -predict the counterarguments your audience might make (is there a similar charity out there?) -find strong support for your own perspective (anecdotes/stories) - how do they use the funds given
16
About creating your power point Don’t add too much text or make it too small – You can always add more slides and break it down – Organize your arguments Add some pictures for interest and pathos Could add statistical graphs – Make them big enough to see! Don’t have distracting colors/fonts/ backgrounds/transitions (keep text readable)
17
How to use your class work time 1.Try not to spend too much time making your power point flashy, use your time to find information and pictures. 2.Find reliable sources and make a works consulted (3 sources) 3.Save it to your folder, email to yourself and/or jbell@sssd.k12.co.us 4. In the computer lab, find your three credible sources and make a works consulted pg on the pp, and fill out your outline
